Hi, my previous Land Rovers have all been Range Rover Classics. I'm now looking at a TD4 freelander 1 for everyday use. To replace a 2005 Jeep KJ 2.8 that's only been trouble since day 1, it can't do 1000 km without breaking down.
I'm looking at TD4 3 door models with manual Gertrac transmission.
I'm struggling to find a Facelift, so my question is how big is the driving experience difference between say a 2001 and 2005 models? Sound insulation, rattles, etc? I also read at some stage Bmw made a lot of changes to improve reliability. Was that with the introduction of Td4 or only a year later in 2001 or 2002?

In my experience, the pre-facelift is better built than the facelift, with generally less rattling from the trim panels. The facelift panels although better looking and more modern, aren't built to the same standards as the earlier trim panels.
However most of the rattling can be cured, with careful application of sound proofing materials, which is what I did.
Externally it's all much the same between the year's.

Thanks. I'm looking at a 2001 in Bonatti grey. Unfortunately got some green interior bits that will have to be painted or replaced with black. And black dye on green carpets?
I already bought heated seat switches for a facelift and ambient temp sensor for dash display so won't be able to use them. Propshaft still connected but looking at tires I suspect VCU gone. Just hope IRD fine.

The facelift can't be better than the pre facelift, cos you can't get a facelift with the L Series ;)[/QUOTE

Missed one last lock down W reg L d lovely standard condition but did not fancy buying with out seeing and travel restrictions
