At the risk of getting flamed! I am gonna ask the million dollar question -

WHY HAVE A SNORKLE?

yup I know it makes a statement -" I am a rufty tufty tratta guy wot goes orfroading!"

but........
Unless yu have a doozil and want to emulate a submarine, I am not sure that one is necessary, providing the engine air intake (and breathers) are above water level, why?
I have (as most of you know) a 2.5 petrol lump - if the water level gets high enuf to swamp the engine electrics, I am fooked, so if the breathers are (for example) at the top of the engine compartment (or behind the truck cab) and the air intake is not going to be swamped, wot other reasons would cause me to need a snork?

The one I'm building for mine isn't so much a snork as a raised air-intake. Makes the intake far more 'splashproof' - you remember the teacup of water I got into my airbox last ford we did, should avoid that happening again.

The manifold was home made, cheapest way is use a few "T" pieces.

Why a snorkel... Well seeing as I live in Tewkesbury (you all know where that is now, don't you) and have lost count of the times the water's come over the bonnet in the last week, then the question should be why not a snorkel.

you loose about 15% of your engine power using a snorkal or so iam told, was going to fit one when i fitted the intercooler but was told the 30% power increse would half to only 15% if i fitted a snorkal.

watch yer mouth... you can fit snorks to petrols too if your waterproof your electrics well. there was an article recently about waterproffing a V8 which had a snorkel fitted, he was wading really really deep. so it must work.

snorkels give you peace of mind when your out laning or at pay and play days when going "balls deep"

if i lost 15% performance in my n/a i think it would have stopped working!

if you wanna wade deep, its worth fitting one... or you will be sorry in the long run.

There's a submerged bit of track at Langdale Quest that's best driven with the offside wheels on the banking this means that the air intake of the 2.5 tubo could end up below the waterline while all the electrics and fan is above water. And before you get all pedantic and point out that it's a diesel, I ferkin know it's just that I'm using this as an example for having a snorkle cos I can't remember where the air intake is on petrol engined landies.

My somewhat tongue-in-cheek "poser" reply was only in response to the suggestion that having a snorkel was only to show " I am a rufty tufty tratta guy wot goes orfroading!" as suggested by 8{|>.
I cant believe that there isn't a good reason, its just for petrol lumps (which need electrics to run). I didnt think it was that obvious.
I spose the next Q should be " If I have a snorkel - how do I waterproof the electrics to take full advantage"?

Of course it is, I couldn't afford the drink for a V8.

As for the 15% power drop, I havn't noticed any loss of power.
In fact my fuel economy has improved slightly, but i put that down to my modded air box using a 200tdi filter element (bigger surface area than the 300tdi element).

Perfectly good reason for a snorkel. Ive just come back from 5 months in Australia (statistically the driest continent on the planet) Most 4x4 vehicles from new come with raised air-intakes for the simple reason of dust. In the outback the roads are basic gravel roads, therefore alot of dust and without a raised air intake your airfilter would be clogged in a matter of hours. The very same principle applies to our country albeit with less dust on our roads!!! Hope this helps.

Mine is a diesal (as it says in my sig).

You've seen my V8 Daft, the intake faces forward. Once I have the piece of pipe running from the front on my air intake to the tube coming off the end of my snork (which I will disconnect when not needed) it would give me a bit more peace of mind if we end up fording again. If I did cock up & swamp my injun bay my lecky bits 'might' get away with it.......at least until I get out of the water. If in addition to soaking me lectrics I did draw water in through me air intake I'd be reet fooked!

I dunt think my placky drainpipe snork adds much in the way of pose appeal!

Reckon Adz has a point too. He ended up with a teacup full of water in the air filter of his doozul (a bit bluddy close fer comfort!) when wading thru no more or less than I wuz, my petroil V8 (with a raincoat over the grill & snork not connected) got away scot free..........er, except for soggy brakes for a couple of miles!

yup - be interested to see wot "high level" air filter Adz has come up wiv - "the sighenteest".

I aint tryin to stir the poo - just interested on the reasons.
