hi,

I'm going to go view a 1996 N 2.5 dse autobiography, 64K all the bells and whistles I'm told the condition is out of this world, warranty from land rover, its up for £8495, do you guys think its expensive? or do you think its a case of you get what you pay for?
 
its a 3 month warranty from the dealership it was PX'd through as they lost the service book! they will give it a full service, a print out of previous services and the said warranty, sound good?
 
£8500 is a lot for a '96 even if it is diesel
A month ago you could have bought my brother in laws P38 DSE for £5000 !
It was a 1998 on an S plate with loads of history and receipts
Is this 3 month warranty really worth £3495 ?


Oh - and also remember autobiographies weren't made by Land Rover until 1999 so it ain't a real one - dealership should have known that !

been to view the car today - WOW! it is totally stunning, in as new condition! i now understand the price.

think i'm going to go for it!

spoken in length to land rover customer services today quoting the vin number to get some more info, yes, autobiography was brought in later than 96, but when ordering a range rover in 96,97,98 it was know as special order, as this RR in question has a blue pearl color, along with other wood bits on the inside, also both seats have memory plus other bits. these were special order.
 
as long as your happy then - but its still way too dear

bet you could get a 2001 v8 with lpg fitted for less, be cheaper to run and quicker

At that price I would at the very least push for a 12 month warranty - and make sure you get a copy of the lost service history too
BTW - there is nothing special about memory seats or "wood bits" - don't let the dealers pull the wool over your eyes - at best it is a '96 car in good condition for the year and as such if you try to sell it in the next year you will only get about half that amount back - if you are happy with that then great, I'm sure you will love it ! :D
 
I too paid top money for my car but after looking at lots of high mileage cars I decided I would have to spend some money to get a low mileage car in the right condition. Back in July, I paid £9980 for a 2001 2.5 with 59k miles, full service history and a comprehensive "unlimited" 12 month warranty, they then did the 60k mile service and replaced a tyre as I had commented that it was a bit thin on tread. Compared to a 2002 car in the new shape at around 22-25k my car was a real bargain. I know I could have found a 2001 for nearer 8k but at the time I couldn't find one with that mileage and in that condition and with that warranty.
You pay your money and take your choice, if you are happy with the condition for that price then go for it. It does sound a bit pricey but if the condition is that good, then go for it, it is a lot of car for the money!

The 4X4 market has plummeted and that price is way over priced! Diesel's do not hold their value as much as petrol and if its a 96 it's not as people have already told you , NOT an Autobiography as they were made from 1999 onwards as a special edition.

You should only pay between £5000-6000 for a good example.....no more.

Do a search on Autotrader if you want confirmation.
 
I paid £7,400 (trade) for a 99 T reg DSE with 1 previous owner, fully stamped book (no receipts though) and a genuine 70k on the clock. Really good condition but no warranty. It was badged and advertised as a dHSE but vin has dse, BTW I can't see anything missing from the dHSE spec (even has the HK stereo+autochanger) bar front fogs which I' m not sure about because of the position of the oil cooler on the diesel).
It got homesick though and blew a head as soon as I got it home to Ireland, so be warned that the dse doesn't buy you the peace of mind that an old tdi would.
Other guys are right about an LPG V8 though. I bought a dse because LPG is only 10% cheaper than petrol over here so the V8 is just too expensive to run. £8,500 would buy you a hell of motor and they really are a much better drive.
 
i agree with all that sounds expensive and i purchased a used range rover from a dealer with a "warranty" i immediatly experienced all the problems you will soon come accross including the head gasket roblem, and the warranty hardly covered anything, i unfortunatey paid out 2800 in the first 6 months of owning it i only got 360 back from the warranty company.

Get them to knock the warranty off and think carefully if it is worth the money.
 
Sounds like a lot of money for a early peggy. But you do get what you pay for. mine is a 1998 SE, 4.0 petrol auto. she stands me in 8k now and thats with a new engine and sorting out all the electrical faults which have shown up over the last year of ownership. best of luck with your purchase...
 
sounds nice but does sound a little on the expensive side. Hope you manage to screw at least a little discount from them. Also, just a thought but I was pretty sure land rover never but never warranty cars of that age. Good to hear they make exceptions shows they have more faith in their own products.

just thought I'd give you an up to as to the progress of my purchase, yes it may be overpriced, but you really need to see it, i will of course supply pics when i get her on Friday to make you all envious! lol :D

the RR is at Ripon Land Rover (yorkshire) who are probably the best dealership you could come across, who are backing the RR because they know how nice an example it is.

i really can not sing there praises enough, they have been amazing in sorting out the smallest of issues I've had. (apart from the price!!! lol!) however i have sold my PX so have re negotiated £8200. i am a firm believer in 'you get what you pay for' so hopefully it will work out ok for me-wish me luck!

one question though, on the dash (middle) where the air suspension is, last button on the left, what is it? think it has what looks like a cog on on it? newer ones have it blanked off i think.

Cool, well sounds ideal. Hope you are both very happy! From memory the button with the cog is for switching the car in to low ratio, I take it, it is a manual gear box?

All the manuals have that, blanked out on the auto as it is on the H gate.
