Exmoor Trim Disappointment

nah it's my mission to make sure people don't get away to easy when they give bad advise or post stupid comments - tis a bit like our "Zeus make really good belt replacement kits" debate

I thought we agreed to disagree.

EVERY single one fitted I have seen by a competant Land Rover mechanic has worked well, covered hundreds of thousands of miles and worked just like it says on the tin. The only bad thing I can think about Zeus timing gear kit is that it is noisy. IF fitted correctly from my experience (limited by only seeing them and not actually fitting them myself) they are all still working great for probably more than 8 years ago and covered many many hundreds of thousands of miles some of which was backwards and forwards to Croiatia 4 times and another all over the world including portugal and spain in a 90. I'm sure there is somebody somwhere slaging them off because they cannot fit them correctly. These were all fitted a long time ago and continue to work as they should to date the vehicles are well looked after and serviced regularly.

In fact I'd go as far as to say they have probably almost paid for themself in the saving in timing belts they would have gone through.

Well... I can only sympathise with yer as I had nothing but good service from them.

I wanted a re-trim on my seats at Billing and they ran out, so said if I went down to them, they would fit them for show price. I went down to the factory where I got a tour. 2 blokes removed my seats, fitted new foam and trim then re-installed them in my 90. Lots of hand shakes, drove back to Bristol. Could not have asked for more!

Did your seats come direct from Exmoor or through "trackers"? who are trackers? the distributer?

The guys at Exmoor are small in number but have good product knowledge. I would be surprised if the fault lies directly with them.

...but what do I know.

Well I do hope it was a one off I may well be buying some of their front seat kits to get mine better in the not to distant future.

Can't complain about their product knowledge at all - have had to call them a couple of times during the TD5 retrim 'project' and I couldn't fault them.

Trakkers are one of the agents for Exmoor as far as I know - like Defender Trim from whom I've also bought Exmoor stuff during this project. I'm by no means an expert but I think Exmoor may recently have set up their own direct sales dept whereas they previously only sold through agents? I may be totally wrong on that score however. But Trakkers have not been at fault - as a middle man they have handled my queries about the various missing bits really promptly and professionally and, from what I can make out, they place the order with Exmoor for the customer and the parts are then sent out direct from Exmoor. Trakkers passed on the correct order, Exmoor ballsed it up.

As for photos - yeah, I will definitely post some here. As some have already suggested, I am very lucky to be able to spend the ammount I have on completely refitting the interior of my TD5 - it's been a rare extravagance and that kind of money is not a trifle for me so, when it's not right, I'm going to whinge. Now they're in though, the seats look fantastic. After a brief test I have to say that the heated seats aren't exactly brilliant compared to those in my VW Caravelle, or for that matter, my old Volvo 740.

The best thing so far has been the accoustic moulded matting system. I think this cost me around £300 but from what I can tell the soundproofing effect is stunning. The rubber used for these is top notch and so heavy you can barely lift it into the cab. It fits every millimetre of the front cabin like a glove - superb.

Tomorrow I fit the front seat belt stalks which Exmoor forgot to include the first time around. I'm also replacing the green dash lights with blue bulbs and adding some aluminium rings around the dials. I have a Kenlowe hotstarter with interior heater boxed and waiting - maybe I'll fit that next week. Oh, and fix the leaky sun roof which threatens to ruin my new upholstery.

After that I need to address security - it already has a factory alarm/immobiliser fitted (of which my insurers want written confirmation from a Landy mechanic before they'll cover me for theft!) but I want some additional physical/visible deterrent, then I think I'll take some instruction on off-road driving before venturing anywhere in it.

Cheers

Nigel

looks like i've been quoted in someones signature here.....anyway, just wanted to say that in my 90 , my front seats come from a scrapyard...sorry don't know what vehicle they came from, but one has what looks like a cigarette burn.

David Ashford and numerous consultant engineers must be wrong then - oh well

David ashcroft, Ah yes he is only a few miles away I do believe my dad gave him some engineering tools many many moons ago while he was completing his course at Rolls Royce as an engineer when we used to trial with him and I was a wee lil man. Ian his dad is a nice bloke too if you go and talk to him.

David Ashcroft also told me to leave the shims in my salisbury diff when I fitted my detroit locker he was wrong they have to be removed to allow it to operate. Moral of the story: People get things wrong occasionally Ashcroft is a sorted company with lots of experience and knowledge behind it and I rate them with the best. but somtimes people make mistakes nobody is faultless

i give up with you, i just hope you don't have to use your skill of applying a logical argument to earn a living

perfect resolution
Back to the matter of exmoor trim and helping a fellow sensible LZ member
So the 300 quid you spent on the mat system was well worth it you have rated it highly. would you spend that sort of money on it again? Its alot of poppy but i fancy it for my 90 i guess i could do with hitching a ride in a genuine 200tdi 90 with it fitted to hear the difference it makes

Our first ever project was to replace the 2nd row bench seats of LR Defender CSW 110 300 Tdi. We decided on Hi-back reclining Trakker seats with low back centre and bought together with the reclining kit from Exmoor. We were complete beginners, spent £612.23 incl. VAT and received bad instructions and missing parts in return. Instructions were there but very unclear to novices like us - but we eventually "muddled" through.

Exmoor rectified the missing bits no problem but given the importance of safe fitting for us and anyone (esp. with kids who would be sitting in afterwards) - it did leave us wondering. Even moreso as the levers used for recline mechanism were dangerous (nearly took our hand off) and remain untouchable & a huge concern for us. Given the health & safety elements we decided not to risk any further DIY despite having done a good job and being largely happy with our project. We brought our vehicle to a specialist as we then decided to replace centre seat with fridge. They said has never seen hi-back reclining seats fitted in rear before. This made us wonder if such seats and the instructions are a bit vague due to lack of individual user demand and/or the assumption that only a specialist/Landy expert might order and fit. If so - a warning of 'naivity' should have been clearly stated to the not so experienced. But we got there and are very pleased with them.

Wow - absolutely identical story to mine then Cassie - not entirely an isolated incident then? What worries me is that I have noticed the more obvious errors and missing bits but, as you've probably worked out, I'm not exactly an expert and there could well be other crucial problems or oversights I've missed.

The missing Exmoor seat belt stalks arrived yesterday and I fitted them today. The bolts provided with them were too big for the thread in my Defender so I had to use the original bolts - would have thought they were a standard size?

Yes, the accoustic rubber is definitely worth the money - the quality of materials and the fit is just brilliant. I'd say overall the £2.5 grand was a lot of money but now it's in place I think it's worth it....but it WAS a lot of money and the process of fitting it has been murder.

Just a small update - used the heated seats for longer this morning and they're better than I thought. Also fitted a steering wheel cover - 'Ultimate Wheel Glove' for a van - 16-17". Also fitted the blue LEds to the dash clocks - brighter and lovely colour. Opened up my boxed Kenlowe hotstarter for a quick once-over of the instructions and they look superb - well and clearly laid out with comprehensive diagrams. Will take some snaps tomorrow.
