Does anyone know if the studs on the manifold down pipe to cat joint are welded or just compressed in
ive snaped 2 of them on one side and cant seem to "bray" them out
How come a 2 hour job always takes all day?
Its a 96 4.6 if it makes any differance

If you are talking about the studs on the manifold flange (3 of them) itself, they are screwed in and are M10 X about 40mm long.
I have had the same problem this week on Er' Indoors Vectra, they were in solid and I have had to take the manifold off, drill and tap them out and fit new ones.
You should be able to get them from any decent motor factor. Make sure that you get the M10 standard pitch thread as they also do a fine pitch version for some cars which won't fit.
Funnily enough I'm sitting at the bench in my garage havin a brew and a smoke and there is a bag with about ten of them staring me in the face!!
If you are in the ****e getting them, send me a PM and I will send you what you want over..for the price of a contribution to the forum to cover postage costs.

Thanks mate but im ok i spent all day drilling them out and used 10mm nut and bolts to rebuild it
Only problem is a think ive broke the welds on the manifold itself because its blowing louder now than when i started but cant find any leaks so it must be under the heat sheld
what are the chances of stud problems when removing the manifold and will i need new gaskets?

The leak is almost certainly from the flexible sections of the manifold which are hidden behind the heatshields. The bolts holding each half of the shield together are a right pain to remove after years of heat. The manifold bolts should come out ok but you will certainly have to replace the manifold to head gaskets...Make sure you put them on correctly as you can block the ports if they are fitted wrongly (Have a look in RAVE).
The passenger side manifold is the easiest of the two to remove, access to the rear bolts on the drivers side manifold is very tight.
Get the shields off first, identify where and how bad the leak is and whether it's worth getting it welded, remember the flexies are stainless, or replacing it.

Its quite a bad leak.sounds like its come completly off so i think im gona need a new one
So if anyone has a spare drivers side manifold they want for a few beer vouchers for send me a pm

Allright then spill the beans
How the f#@k do you get the drivers side heat shield off when the bolts have had it?
i cant get a grinder to the bolts so am i missing a trick or is it just a matter of scabed knuckles and alot of swearing?
if i cut it off do i realy need to put one back on?
in the good old days loads of cars didnt have heat shields
