I would welcome any feedback from my learned friends here. I have just had my FL2 -2011 GS back from its 90K service by local LR dealer. It had the Rear axle pinion bearing and the haldex overhauls done by them 16 months ago and they have always carried out the annual servicing, etc. This time they aid as an observation on the MOT report that the shield was damaged and would kindly fix it for £171 and that one of the intercooler pipes showed a small leak for they want another £281.

So I paid for the service and today had a look myself at fixing the heat shield issue. Only to find what I think is negligence on their part. Please see attached photos. It appears to me that there is a plastic brake pipe protection and retaining cover missing from the nearside exposing the brake pipes and allowing the heat shield to flex and tear. I deduce this on the basis there one on the offside. As per the photos. I believe they must have forgotten to put it back when they took out the prop to replace the axle bearing. Can anyone please help me to confirm this before I go back to them.

Also is it an easy job to change the intercooler pipe I have not yet checked
which one of them is the issue

That stuff is extremely weak, and the slightest vibration starts a tear, you have no spare holes in the heat shield to fasten it any tighter, so the option is yours, I would be bolting/diverting a piece of aluminium or stainless across the tear to stop it going further
As for intercooler hose they ought to tell you which one and why?

Thanks for coming back. Re the intercooler pipe you are correct so I will ask them . But re the heat shield - I agree that is an option for a solution but what I was keen to know before considering this was whether there should have been a another black plastic brake pipe protection plate/heat shield retainer covering the brake pipes that side and retaining the heat shield just like on the off side as per the photo and without another freelander 2 to compare it with or an official diagram I don't know for sure?

So 16 months ago they did work on your car and now you find the heat shield is damaged 16 months later?

I think you will struggle to get them to accept responsibility for that given the timescale - anything could happen in that time frame with. It also driving tbh

Thanks for the reply but I think you are missing the point. The aim of my question is to establish if there is a plastic trunking like cover missing. It the fact that if this should be there as per the photo of the other side of the shield then it may be due to to negligence by the dealer service engineer when the axle bearing was replaced as they would most likely have had to remove it at that time for some reason maybe to remove the prop. If turns it there was never a cover this side then of course that would be down to me to decide how to sort it. Trouble is I don't have any exploded diagrams to tell so only to so is by looking under another Freelander 2.

Even so how would you prove that they didn't refit it, and that it hasn't just fallen off? Just saying like, isn't necessarily negligence.

Because it has only ever been serviced by them and if you saw how well the one the other side is fixed then you would realise that a whole lot more damage would have been caused if it just fell off and the area around it is very, very clean just as if someone took it off professionally. I am not in the habit of chancing my arm I am just trying to work out if I am being ripped off. As if like many customers I had just said yes fix it when they told then I would be none the wiser that this potential fraud had ever happened and I want to take them to task to stop it happening to anyone else.

I don't think it's fraud. That would only apply if they deliberately damaged the parts, so you pay for the replacement. It's entirely possible that it fell off some time after the work was done. If so then it's impossible to prove that it wasn't attached properly to start with.
If you aren't happy, then take your money elsewhere.

£281 sounds excessive for a boost pipe, unless it's mostly labour charges.

I have now managed to look underneath another fl2 and the plate I am imagining should be there does not exist it seems LR have covered one side and not the other. I guess a cost decision not to do it and put such a shoddy baco foil type heat shield as if had the cover then this would not have happened plus the brake pipes that side would have greater protection. I have a solution though now using some stainless wire a few self tappers and large penny washers.

Re the Intercooler pipes I now have the part number and diagram emailed to me by the garage which is the same as the one you posted and the part number in question is the smallest one 6k683a so I will be following that up later to see if it is within my skill set or I need to get a local mechanic to do it as I do not have many tools for this sort of work.

Yes you are correct my error. I managed to provide a decent fix today but never the less a cover over these with the same method of clamping down the shield as the other side would be a much better job and would have avoided this sort damage to the shield.
