Exhaust gas

How much exhaust gas would be acceptable coming from the Turbo?

say if I removed breather on the inlet how much exhaust gas would be acceptable? I seem to have a lot

Confused by the question....!!

All the Exhaust gases go through the turbo (apart from the small amout that gets recirc'd through the EGR if fitted)...

as I thought and as I've blocked the EGR I clearly have something wrong

will post a video as soon as I can

Do you mean the exhaust gas coming through feed for the EGR valve. If you do there will be a lot it is at exhaust manifold pressure before the turbo.

no it's blocked off at both ends and pipe removed

sorry, in work and rushing, I’m thinking the wrong way round it's from the crank case when I remove the breather there is a constant stream of exhaust gas from the hose being fed into the low pressure side of the turbo (ie: black plastic pipe with over engine with “TURBO INTERCOOLED” on it)

Constant stream of air from crankcase not exhaust gas, if you have exhaust gas coming from there you have big problems.

It's the vent from the crankcase normally the crank case is kept at a partial vacuum. If you have a lot of smoke coming from there it is piston blow by. You may improve things if it's just oil mist by removing cam cover and cleaning oil separator and vent valve that are inside the cover. You have a pretty old engine there maybe getting past it's best. And it may indeed be piston blow by. Or it maybe has just had the pipe connected to the intake and if an old cam cover it may not have a vent valve inside it. On early engines like that the valve was outside in the pipe run.

Mines a 97 and it's got a round shaped breather that is plugged into the turbo inter cooled pipe and it gets oily is that normal

Yes.

That is an old engine and not a Landrover EGR M51. They were all fitted with a plastic manifold. That is an engine from a Vauxhall or BMW.

I was surprised that little bit of plastic is £90 + VAT from Island 4x4 (STC2806), mine is an early 1998 non EGR. I was wondering if there was any way of cleaning the filter inside it.

You could try flushing it with a mild solvent. But be aware there is a valve in there that could be damaged if you do anything to aggressive. Soak and flush with Paraffin and a gentle blow out may help.

Mine doesn't have that part??

I'd put it in an ultrasonic cleaner with warm water and washing up liquid

I have that engine in my car (2001) but it does have EGR, may explain why I have a few problems, haven't got round to cleaning out EGR valve yet and I do get crankcase mist if I take the oil filler cap off

You will because the gases are not going through the oil separator but directly to atmosphere. Oil separator and vent valve are inside cam cover. You may get benefit if you clean them. A partial vacuum should exist in the crankcase if everything is working properly. With the filler cap on of course.

You will need more than hot water and washing up liquid to shift the **** that gets in there. Put some Paraffin in your cleaner and you may do so good.
