Excessive play in steering wheel

2004 TD5

Was sat in car waiting for OH with engine stopped and I was moving the steering wheel from side to side. It seemed very loose so I opened the window to look at the road wheels and I could move the steering wheel 3 inches before there was any resistance and the road wheels did not move. It is the same with the engine running.

Are there any checks or adjustments I can make or is it more expense?

sounds normal to me:D most landys are like steering a boat in a sea full of jelly at the best of times

steering column ujs make it a whole lot worse though if they are knackered.

mine is pretty much bang on now! (still drives like a boat in jelly though)

I'll echo that Noisy ... one of them had worn on my Defender so I replaced it. Now it doesn't wander all over the road and only wanders around on it's own carriageway ;)

Thank you to all, the car has always had a mind of it's own but I just thought that play was a bit excessive. Will check out the UJ's

Thanks

Mine had gone really stiff - 200 shape disco had no needle bearings in ujs, just metal on metal.

Fitted new britpart item and omg what an improvement. No play, and considerably lighter/smoother steering. One of mine had seized pretty bad, I though it was the steering box at fault.

30 quid hurrah!

Had this on my 95 disco it would wander all over tha road, my local mechanic recommended new tyres as mine were different makes on the front, and well what a difference that made lol
