hi thinking of getting a new project a ex mod 90.

i recall they are on different electrics but what are the potential implications of this?
one thing I would want to do is to change the indicators and break lights to the led versions would that work?
Also they have the Speedo in km/h can they be swapped out for mph easily and would it need any recalibrating etc?

Thanks for your help any other helpful info be appreciated

The electrics are 12v - same as civilian defenders.

The 24v electrics (if fitted) is only for the military radio setup and is totally seperate from the actual vehicle wiring loom.

I don’t know about LED as I haven’t done it myself, but changing to them would be the same as changing a civilian defender to LED lights - of which many many people have done so it can be done.

You can swap the speedo for the same model era speedo in MPH of you want - I didn’t bother, I just marked the speedo with 30,50 and 70mph marks - however old one out and new one in - no calibration needed.

The headlight switch is different - works fine tbh but you can swap it for a civilian one if you want to, but the original works fine.

Oh and it’s brakes lol

As above. All Wolf, and series 3 FFR’s are fully 24V, the standard military landys are as Flat describes.

My speedo has kph on outside and mph on the inside but I believe some only have kph on them.

Defender speedos are ropey at best, and a loose indication to what speed you are doing! So I wouldn’t bother swapping it! You’ll learn pretty quick what speeds your doing just based on what noise the engine is making!

LED lights can be easily swapped. Most come with 2 or 3-pin econoseal plugs to match later Defenders, so if the car has the older bullet connectors then just get the matching connectors for the vehicle side. As long as you have the right crimping tool for the pins they're quite a reliable connector. You'll need to change the flasher relay for an adjustable one or the indicators will be doing double-speed. Some kits come with ballast resistors but this is more work and is basically a bodge. Do it properly and get the correct relay.

km/h speedo is legal and isn't too much of an issue- I drove around Europe for a couple of weeks with a mph-only speedo, and after a while you tend to ignore the numbers and just learn where the needle needs to be anyway. Have driven a couple of LHD cars in the UK and it's the same. But if you want, a UK civilian speedo will swap straight over. Make a note of the original miles on the new speedo and the km on the old speedo when you swap them over. Some military speedos had mph on the inside but in my experience, the green backlighting makes the inner scale unreadable at night.
