In the 90/110 era they used the 2.5 naturally aspirated. In the Wolf (heavy duty defender) era (current day) they use the 300tdi.

They have also used various other engines, v8’s in snatch land rovers and other special vehicles and td5 in some of the white fleet stuff

Were the 2.5 n/a any good . My friend has seen one for sale , but it has a top end noise, easy fix ??? Thanks

Bit sluggish, and pedestrian but strong engine. Runs forever. And surprisingly decent off road.

@jamesmartin can comment more on top end noise - it could just be tappets need adjusting or could be valve caps have broken. As long as the head is in good order (not cracked etc) then it can probably be sorted.

I liked my 2.5na but not enough to keep it, so changed it for a 200tdi :/
