every carb but which to choose?

At the moment I am doing this :doh::doh::doh:
My 2a is running a solex carb it looked a bit knackered with quiet a bit of silocone sealant around gasket areas so i thought I'd replace it and on advice ordered a weber. In the mean time I actually did some research

now I'm starting to think a refurb of the solex is better as after removing the silicone I've found it was doing very little and the carb still runs well. I also have a zenith from another series! So which would you choose? At the moment I'm favouring refurbing the solex , if people agree is it a job to be done at home or is it best to send it away?

Hi I had a Zenith on my last petrol Series Which was dumping fuel strait into the inlet manifold due to a warped top cover not sealing properly so I bought the refirb kit and rebuilt it also at the same time skimming the body and top cover so they make a tight seel using a plate of glass oil and fine wet and dry paper if I can find the guide I used at the time I will post a link later.

Whats bad about the Weber?

Got a Zenith on mine, works OK, consumption about 12 - 15 mpg around town, 20 on a long run at about 45mph, will do 70 but consumption is about 12mpg. The only problem I have is stalling in very cold weather before the engine is fully warm, can't seem to find a happy choke setting.

I have solex on mine
Starts the motor at first attempt each time on lpg
Also when i switch to unleaded juice

it also starts at the first attempt
And goes pretty well
But if i try to start on fuel for the first time it does not start
I think the carb is ok but i have a fuel sending issue

SU! SU! SU!

I never got on with my webber, took it apart and cleaned it and re-sealed/gasketed it loads of times and it didn't help, always stalled coming up to lights etc.

SU has more power and does 27mpg, starts every time and idles at a beautifully steady 400 rpm.

but they are expensive if you've not got one lying about. by most accounts webbers are OK, must just be me
