Hey guys, i've got a selection of bare aluminium tub panels, a roof and zinc steel door skins to be sprayed. Am i right to assume epoxy primer can be used on them instead of buying etch and high build primer??

Ive also got some abs plastic wings, could these be epoxy primed or am i better plastic priming them?

Cheers
Russ

Epoxy can be used on the bare ally or steel, the plastic I'm unsure about. You're best asking the paint supplier about that one.
It's good stuff to use though and gives a nice build, if a little expensive.

Cheers aarron. It was the jawel paints I was looking at. It seamed alright priced compared to buying etch and high build primer

For the plastic you should use an adhesion promoter then prime normally. Ive not used epoxy but its mainly used for bare metal. Ive had good success painting plastic with an adhesion promoter, primer (rattle can), base (rattle can) and 2k clear also rattle can.

Unless the epoxy paint is direct adhesion with an etch acid built in then I would still etch prime it first - epoxy is sticky sticky stuff but nothing beats doing it properly.

Also note that on bare aluminium you need to prepare it directly before you paint it, if you have prepped it in advance before you paint it scotchbrite it first, clean with thinners or panel prep then paint immediately. As soon as aluminium starts to corrode the level of adhesion your paint will get starts to diminish.
