Removing the engine on the 300tdi disco.

Undone all 15 nuts and bolts including the nasty horrible one on the very top! on the bell housing and it's refusing to split, it's split at the bottom and drivers side but not around the top passenger side, near starter motor.

Am I missing something? All the mounts are off, including the mounts underneath (4 bolts 2 each side of the bell housing )

Tried wacking screwdrivers in, pulling engine forward rocking it side to side up and down, it's just not coming apart.

Any tips?

Thankyou all with out landyzone I'd still be swearing at that top nut on the housing!
Your all so very helpful!

Have you supported the weight of both the engine and the gearbox? I struggled splitting me 200 and that just needed the weight taking up to the correct point and lever bars inbewteen the housing.

Position a jack where the gearbox joins transferbox as that's where most of the weight is, it may be stopping you prising it apart.

Thanks for quick reply :) I've got a trolley jack and block of wood under, tried lifting that up and down too.

don't forcefully pry it apart, it should slide out easily.

like above, you need to align the gearbox so it doesn't bind.

so jack under gearbox, lowering or raising as needed and it'll slide out.

if you have gaps at one side, but not the other, then it isn't supported properly, get the jack under and lift the bottom until the gaps are equal. :)

Wot he said ^^^ :)

Thank you all I probs haven't got it aligned properly!

I've counted all the nuts and bolts and have 15 all together, counted holes on a pic of bell housing and there 15. Felt with my hand around the housing and there all off :)

Starter motor is off too

And I'll try putting in gear.

Thanks again to you all I'll update tomorrow :)

And the biggest tit of the year award goes to...... me..

Hehe all been there fella :) im guessing the 13mm bolt above the starter usually tight as $*&^

Thanks guys in the process of mating it together now, finding it a bit difficult but sure it's doable with a little bit of pushing, pulling and fiddling about :)

use a jack to help align it, stick it in gear, bit of wood wedged above the gearbox to stop it moving, socket on crank bolt to give it a wiggle when you shove it so the splines drop in.

I bet! Getting it back together was just as bad!

I then got it all ready to run, had two fuel pipes swapped on the lift pump, so wouldn't run. Properly then not start at all, only took me a hour of priming and 2 days of landy zoning and thinking to realise...

All well now though, been on the road for 4 days and already made a new dent green laning :D

Thanks mate :)

Luckily I had a empty workshop with a big roller door on the front, as work is a bit quiet at the moment, had to keep the door open though as I was feeling really sick from the fumes the first day after being underneath the disco, the weather was nice though :)

Dont wanna do it again in a hurry!!

luckily i realised straight away after the engine only seemed to run for a few mins at a time after priming :p :D
