Hi folks.

Quick question but difficult to couch properly for the search function so here it is. I have a 1999/2000 Discovery TD5 with a cracked head. Its currently for sale on eBay (much reduced price) but I'm considering having a bash at fixing it, I'm not completely petrified of spanners...

My question is; how do I confirm what revision of engine I have? I've seen P10 bandied about, are there other types and is mine likely to be the version they only put in four cars so is incredibly rare/expensive for parts? (It usually is...)

I mean I'd rather sell it, but what can one do?

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Isn't the "giveaway" clue that the 15P engine has a cooler around the EGR pipe across the front of the engine?

Not always! Mine is a 2004 15P engine and it doesn't have an EGR cooler.

Note to OP, I have a thread on the TD5 section about my cracked head rebuild.

My repair bill has grown quite a bit, now at £1.7K and its not back together yet! But mine had runaway and melted No1 piston, a straight head swap shouldn't be too bad, but budget for extras, i.e. injector checking.

I got my parts from Turners, the head kit is £150, you may need other parts.

This steel and rubber pipe is the external fuel return that only 15p and 16p engines have. If you don't have this you have a 10P (very likey as said on anything before 2002)

Thanks folks.

I'll keep an eye out for that wee pipe to confirm.

Nothing quite so drastic as a melted piston or run away engine, there's just a bit of over pressure in the coolant circuit - caught it early I think.

I'd rather not do the head repair but needs must.

I have another couple of questions (although not specifically related to the thread topic but...)

Is it possible to know if the head gasket has gone or the head is cracked? I know about pressure testing on the head (although I don't really know what it entails.) Does pressure build up in the coolant circuit mean the head is definitely cracked?

And...

Is stripping the head for pressure testing a ball ache?

I've done a head gasket on a BMW F650, but that was just one cylinder, two cam shafts and four valves - not really the same thing I reckon...

Thanks again folks.

NO is the answer, All you can do is take the head off and get it pressure tested to be sure, if all ok its the head gasket its self. On some gaskets it is possible to see where the gasket has blown on a cylinder but not easy on the type of gasket a TD5 has.

Stripping the head for pressure test is clearly more work but take your time lay everything out and put it back where it came from it the tip I can give you.

Many thanks for this.

I've owned two Land Rovers (this TD5 and a pretty tragic Freelander.) I don't mind fettling, but the LR experience has not been good to date.

;-)

I tried the tank cap, bought another which fell to bits within a couple of days.

Pretty sure its not that.

Thanks for the eBay link, I'll snap one of those up to confirm.

Ta.
