Engine transplant

Hello, i am new to the forum,

A mate of mine said he gets all is problems sorted on here!!

I have 110 defender, 1990, its is excellent condition, only problem is, it has a toyota landcruiser engine and gearbox, and to be honest, the gearing doesnt work well with the defender diffs.

I want to put this back to a proper landrover, not a toyotarover, or a landota.

What would be the best engine to drop back in it, i think it had a 2.5 before, diesel of course. should i find a second hand TD, or a TDI

Your help would be appreciated.

200tdi all the way...£200 for a disco one, double that for a defender one..plus 50-100 for a lt77 gearbox. If you go for the disco option you will need a few extra bits and to read the threads on the conversion...

If you can find me complete Disco 200s (that haven't been ragged to death) for £200, I'll have five off you

I'm kidding buddy But that is a good price, if I needed one I'd have it off you. People seem to want an arm and a leg for a decent Tdi these days

Tempted to buy it as a spare, to add it to the other 2 that I have in the shed in bits Can never have too many Tdis

Oh and I've never seen a genuine Defender 200 sell for less than £700 in working condition.

tdi in both forms maybe not most powerful but best engine yet designed ,enough power ,economical ,easy,rebuild

Might be worth speaking to Milner in Matlock Derbyshire if they are still around - they used to specialise in Japanese engines and boxes in Land Rovers and produced conversion kits and ancillaries, so might have an option to allow your existing set up to work better ?

thanks for the info, i would rather get rid of the toyota setup and get it all landrover.

Langers...I see disco 200's go all the time for around 200, i do however spend far too much time on ebay...and defender 200's for 500 although they are rare. I will sell you 5 disco lumps for 250 a pop...as and when i find them for 200 Deal?

200tdi engine disco 450

200tdi defender engine 700 upwards......hens teeth.

as for gearbox start at 350 for a ****ed lt77s.

My mistake...those would be sellers prices then?

And you coincidentally have how many?


Oddly enough i got my defender lt77, great condition for £50...but we were talking engines....

I have 3 disco 200tdis.

4 300 disco tdis
and 1 defender 300 tdi.the choice is yours but cash up front.

It's not me that needs one (although your prices are tempting, if i was a buyer with a head injury i'd buy them).

They come and go regular.Had 18 200tdis at 1 point.collecting 300s now.
