Engine swop problem.

Just fitted a 3.9 v8 in to my classic, this engine came out of a disco with a auto box, I removed the torque converter and fitted my flywheel, clutch and pressure plate with no problem. All the gears can be selected with ease, problem is when moving off there is a loud grating sound and the vehicle comes to a stop, the gear stick is still in first, and hasnt jumped out of gear and can be put in to any gear without any problem, its more like it has jumped out of high ratio (it does the same in low) as I havnt altered anything on the gearbox side, what can it be.

did you fit spigot bush in crank

Did you put a spigot bearing in the end of the crank?
