One side of the motor has got hot possibly?

yeah I was thinking that but I couldn't figure out why.

Do the heads look the same from the outside?

yes I don't think its had a head change not sure though.

i.e. have they the same level of oxidisation to the alloy?

they look like stock heads.

Look between the block and head at the head gaskets - are they old or newish looking?

old looking

If it's an engine bought unwittingly from someone unscrupulous it might be worthwhile checking it's all there internally and not a loosely put back together f**ked one. (so it looks good enough to sell to an unsuspecting punter)
You may think I'm joking, but it DOES happen.

No I don't think your joking. I'm just hoping he didn't flat out screw me.

If it was me, I'd be pulling the heads off for a closer look inside and be preparing myself for a partial engine rebuild.

I think the guy sold me a engine with 200k instead of 80k the way it looks.

I have been thinking about pulling the heads and replacing the gaskets but if it has a bad main bearing or rod bearing then that's just that much more money I will have put in it. I wish I would have just rebuilt the thing.

btw the engine I pulled out was missing a push rod. lol

That hasn't had an oil change for years. If it was me, I wouldn't fit that as it is. It looks like its on its last legs. I've rebuilt enough of these engines to know.

Strip it and check it. I guarantee the cam and lifters will be ****ed looking at the sludge thats in there, the timing chain will be well slack and you'll more than likely have end/main bearing wear too. If all that **** is in the rocker covers, imagine whats in the sump!

well it supposively has a guarantee so I would get another engine if this one is bad so I guess I am going to drop it in and hope for the best.

question: I am swapping the distributor over. Is there a way to tell if I'm on the compression stroke with out the valve cover being off and I am assuming that the cylinder under the oil fill is #1.

ready to go in. looks better than it did,

Seems like good advice to me, if nothing else, why wouldn't you while you've got an engine out of the car and the opportunity to take care of all those things that are a pain in the behind to do when it goes wrong in the car?

BTW, yes it looks quite clean and tidy sitting on the garage floor but that's only on the outside. Hope you get away with it:eek:

Well its in and I'm ready to start it but the battery is low and I need to figure out where two of the ground wires go. One comes off the starter and one comes from the back of the head on the drivers side.

Well I got it started :) but the oil cooler line was cut on the engine I put in so all the oil poured out on the floor :( but it didn't sound bad :) and I have another line I can put on. It just sucks that 3 quarts of oil just poured out on my garage floor.

OK, I drove her down the street tonight and its running good :) I need to lube the drivetrain does anyone have a good thread on the maintenance?

Crawl under it with a grease gun and pump grease in anywhere you see a grease nipple. If the UJ's don't take grease give a firm bash with Land Rover Tool Number 1 (a hammer, if you didn't know) then try again.

When you've greased the props/UJ's, ball joints (note not all ball joints have grease nipples), check oil levels in diffs, gearbox and transfer box. if you want to go really mad, strip hubs and check condition of wheel bearings and pack with fresh grease. that should pretty much take care of it.
