engine swap

Hi I have a 1991 vogue se.I've been given a VM diesel engine and box, my questions, will the VM engine fit my gearbox also are there two different types of VM engies ie 2.4 & 2.5 if so how do I tell what I have.I don,t know the age of the donor vehicle. The VM seems to have a bit of a bad reputation reliability wise. Is it a good idea to put in a lot of effort to fitting one?
