My Freelander td4 2litre engine got a fuel problem so need to swap the motor I am getting one from a BMW 320d is it going to fit and what modifications need to be done

Maybe worth investigating and solving fuel problem. Just a thought... ;)

Would be gutting to change engine and find it is a fuel feed issue!

As Andy said. Fixing the fault is much easier than replacing an engine from the wrong vehicle. There's loads of differences between the BMW M47 and the Rover M47R (R means Rover). BMW changed the M47 considerably over the years, so even if it's possible to replace it, you could well need loads of parts from the original engine.

What happens if the fault isn't the engine, but one of the components you swap over to the replacement engine. You could enter a world of hurt, for no gain at all.

I don't even know if the bell housing patterns are the same from the rover M47 to the BMW one?

I'm not 100% sure they are myself. It's definitely not an easy or recommended swap, especially if it's only to fix a fuel problem.

I believe only the 318D (fl) or 320 (nfl) E46 might work.
M47D20 needs to match. But many other bits will have to be swapped (inlet, brackets, etc)
It is very common around here (UK and friends) for "mechanics" to throw the change engine card on the table. Charge a fortune, do less brain demanding work or investigation.
Would be funny if this fuel problem being the LP pump. And you replace the engine and same: "bad engine mate, did you hear it running lol"
Return it, pay me again to fit a "good one"

If a replacement engine IS needed, there has got to be as many (more) rusted out, smashed up, failed MOT M47 Freelanders being broken as BMWs - or even just got blad tyres so scrapped these days (in UK anyway, over here even ropey ones are still worth a few bob).
