I want to change the 3.5 V8 in my 101 ambi for a diesel, but what to
choose ? I have a budget of about 800 quid, and I have seen 200 and 300
TDi engines going for that kind of money. With ingenuity, can one fit
any engine that will physically fit, assuming its a free running modern
engine ? There are a couple of Van breakers round hear with Nissan FD35
(?) engines, and a landcruiser diesel, but I am not sure what to look for.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...........

Don't do it, stick with the V8!
Your £800 should provide you with a decent gas kit!

Failing that reasonable quantities of Guinness!

If Your specification is vague or imprecise, you'll likely get what you

Probably too modern but one of the Merc sprinter engines looks to be
ok, the 5 cyl om612 gives 156bhp (turbo/intercooled/common rail DI)
and still has more torque than the original at 3600 (3.5 peak torque
3000). Biggest problem is peak power at 3600 verses 4750 on the RV8
meaning you'll need to up the gear ratio by 30% to match the current
set up, and this is already too low unless you are laden plus 1.5
tonnes of trailer. The 200 tdi produces its peak torque at half this
but revs to 4000 IIRC

Remember the gear box has to handle all this torque and upping the
gearing behind this, either in the transfer gears or the diffs
increases the load on the box.

I hear the sound of a large hammer hitting a nail square on the head.......!
Heathen, you blastheme against the god that is 8 spark plugs, you must at
once go and read some v8 tuning articles and recite all the v8 engine's bolt
torque figures continuously whilst listening to a pre-recorded endless loop
tape of a 4.6 with open pipes at full song during a hillrally, until you
come to your senses!
On the other hand, if you must fit a diesel, may I recommend a substantial
budgetary increase to accommodate a BMW 3.0 diesel with matching 5 speed
autobox, mated somehow to a landy transfer box? I've got one of these
engines in it's original car as produced (330dSE Sport Auto, don't stone me
or send me to coventry, please!), and it's awesome. I've always wondered
what it would do for my 110 with it's 184bhp and 288lbft. Chippable to
224bhp and 330lbft, by the way! I always return to sanity by following the
advice given above. My doctor says I'm all better now, just! Another cup of
earl grey, vicar?..........

1. It's already fitted.
2. It's standard.
3. Parts for the engine are cheap and easy to come by (true also of
200/300 TDi, but not all Jap engines)
4. With a gas kit, you get economy of a diesel
5. It won't be an easy conversion (though plenty have done it)
6. It will look like a 101 and sound like a tractor
7. You don't know how good an engine from a breakers is until you've
done all the hard work.
8. If it breaks you can find plenty of replacements and fit them very
easily.

Unless you are going somewhere where LPG is not available, I don't see
the point...

yer need their new one, as reported in CAR magazine. 3-litre, still, but
twin-turbo, they claim 272BHP @ 4400RPM, 413LBFT @ 2000RPM. 14Kg heavier
than the single-turbo one.

Vauxhall, using similar technology, claim 212BHP @ 4500RPM, 295LBFT @
1400RPM, from, would you believe, a 1.9 four-pot. That'd make a nice engine
for a freeloader... In fact, it'd make a nice engine for a disco, an' all.

Vauxhall say it's only a concept, at the moment, but expect somethign
similar on the market in under 2 years.

bloody impressive figures, however you look at 'em.

thinking on, OP mentions the Land cruiser engine, now if you got the 4.2
turbo version assuming it'll fit, it'd be quite an impressive beast.

It's a physically long motor though - probably be a bugger to get it to
fit. There's always a Toyota 13B Turbo, or 14B turbo (4cyl 3.4 or 3.7)
or the newish 15B 4.1 litre NA (which go very well). Thery're all DI
motors so no glow plugs to worry about.
