Hello All and thanks for reading

i have recently rebuilt an diesel 2.25 engine for my 88" series, the engine had a rebore , crank grind , new valves the works. i have put the engine back in now and it dues run with a spray or cold start but i don't no how to set it up from now i have turned the idle screw on the fuel pump so that the engine is running slow but not lumpy atm the fuel pump is set to the mark on the pump but i did read that it mite have to be twisted after you get it running ? and also it dues seem a bit smoky i expected a bit of smoke after but had hoped that it would clear up but i am now starting to think it mite be something else
also i no this is going to sound silly when talking about an old landy but it feels a sluggish

so if anyone has set one up after fitting it could you please let me no where im going wrong

many thanks kitkat

Dont go using spray to start it, it is not needed, and puts uneeded strain on everything.
You need to set it up as per the book, the 2.25 diesel will not give you any more by doing otherwise.
Do not idle for long periods, and do not try and "baby" it . Drive normally, but not with excessive revving. You will get some blue smoking to start but this should quickly dissapear. After approx 500 miles it would pay to check inj pump timing , as timing chain etc will have bed in by then.
They always do seem under powered , as they were. They get slightly better once all the transmission oils are warmed up, but after driving a more modern vehicle they will never seem "spritely"
If smoke continues and is whitish then its not burning the diesel correctly, various reasons, poor timing , compression. if black smoke means not enough air, running rich, if blue then means burning oil . HTSH

i have been back to my books to try and see if i have mist something it says all about fixing the engine but there is not one page that says anything about what to do now its back in the only thing that it says is to set the slow running speed on the idea screw on the fuel pump i have tried to do that but could only do it by ear as i don't have a tool to messier rpm , there must be more to it than that
