Maybe oil contamination in fly wheel/clutch? Or new Clutch needed? Does this mean im going to need to take the gear box out?

Is there anyway to test before i take the gear box out?

Thanks

it depends on the problem. You had your crank shaft out didn't you (looking at another thread)? did you change the rear crank oil seal? It might be leaking. there might not be anything wrong with the pressure plate apart from oil contamination. No-one could possibly say until you get in there.

there is a lot of oil leaking from i think my transfer gear box and in general the engine a bit. So i think that is quite possibly the problem.

Thor1950 - Im a novice with about -8-9 months of experience with land rovers and cars in general. I dont pretend to be anything else. Fixing old land rovers is a dieing art and you should be nice to new guys giving it a go, not ****ing on them from up high.

OK but............. when you have to take a transmission and transfer box out I only want to do it once. So for me is replace fly wheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, reinforced clutch fork and pilot bushing and rear main seal and in put shaft transmission seal. split trans and transfer and change power shaft between the two. Most times I get the flywheel refaced, instead of new

My motto do it once do it right

yeah but if it's just a leak of the crank seal, then you might only need to spend a tenner, not hundreds of pounds! There might be 50,000 miles left on that friction plate for instance. If you can afford to have it off the road for a couple of days, just crack it open and have a look and see what's what then get the bits that you need :) that's what I'd do anyway.

Is true. But them clutch disc can suck alot of oil in them.

If it's simply oil on your clutch, and depending on its age and make, when we were up the blue we used to soak ours in petrol and set fire to it.

That gets rid of the oil and didn't damage the friction pads.

Just a thought considering where you are.

just an update, i managed to find a clutch plate and what i thought was the pressure plate but when we opened it it was just slightly not the right pressure plate the bolts holes would only line up 2 holes and the rest where then out of line. I had to get the LR out of the work shop before the boss came back so put the old pressure plate back in with the new clutch plate and release bearing.
It doesnt look like i will be able to source a new pressure plate here. i know its not prefect but will it be ok?

It was leaking from the gear box as well so replaced the seals and gaskets.
