Engine run in.

Hi all,just a query on what speed to run in my engine.ive just put a new piston and new set of rings on all the pistons.also put new big en shells on the con rods.the engine is a Disco 200tdi in my 110 with a disco t/box.thanks for any advice.

I have always been told that the best thing to do when running in a diesel, is to fill it with 'running in' oil, or a 10-40 mineral oil and then just drive it steady. Don't be afraid to get it up to 60, but don't thrash it either. Use low-down torque i.e. allow it to pull in as higher a gear as you can without allowing the engine to struggle or judder. If you can give it some work (i.e. load it up / pull a trailer) then do so. Expect it to use oil and blue-smoke a bit to start off with as the rings begin to bed in. After about 500 miles, drain the mineral oil, swap the oil filter and fill with a semi-synthetic 10-40 oil.

I could be wrong?

If yours was a 21/4 petrol I'd be saying 30mph for 500 mls and 50mph for the next 1000mls. As its a modern setup with more rings and better oil galleries and so on, personally I'd just stick to 50ish for 1000mls and 2000rpm. Compare to any modern new Landy and there'll be little to guide you in the book. I would still change the oil after 500mls for all that as a precaution.

Agree with Lynall

Check the fluids regularly, and avoid hard acceleration or over revving in lower gears

Hard acceleration in a Landy I know is aspirational, but over revving in 1st, 2nd or 3rd is best avoided

at one place i worked when we had built engine they where put on dynometer and run under increasing heavy load for 20 mins ,they where then run in,the heavier the load the better not free revs pootling about will glaze bores disels need hard work

Spot on, no need to **** about with "running in" oils or any other nonsense. Get in and drive it.

I remember years ago when i worked in a haulage firm in Norwich there was one driver who got all the new trucks to run in and they always pulled better when he did the running in, but this was several years ago now!
