So not replaceable easily?
Dead easy if you have a pro rivnuts tool.
I suspect the hole is abit mullered, the bolt/rivnut spins so they get ripped out which can mean a new rivnut has little to grip to.
A couple of solutions spring to mind if it is butchered.

Looks like I'm exposing my lack on knowledge of river nuts - never used one - you insert it from the front?

Yes, it then gets crushed using the tool from outside, like a pop rivit but has a thread in it.

Google rivnut.
You can use a bolt/nut to set them but for that size(M10?) It would need to be an aluminium one possibly.
Aluminium would be fine there.
Further over to the left you have two more holding the steering column on(from memory) these must be steel.
I had to replace all of mine as the galv fecked them.

Looks like this will be my next order... Thanks for the advice. I'm assuming you just get a box of mixed sizes like rivets
 
Yes, if you want to do big ones, you need the next tool up the range. That one has proved adequate for my Landrover needs, though.
Are the rivnuts supplied aluminium? It doesn't say but I suspect they are. I've got a beast that does up to M12 in steel, air operated.
 
Were the inner wheel arches galv as standard for a 200tdi Defender?

I’ve got galv ones on mine, in places starting to rot through, nothing major. if they’re original done well to last 28yrs
 
Some pitting rust on the shaft going into the gear box. I’ve oiled it and given it a bit of a clean to keep it at bay whilst the engine is out.

The rust in the photo is slightly pitted, Is this going to be a problem? Just checking it doesn’t run up against a seal of some kind?

I would say good clean and ensure you change the little bearing it runs in. (Spigoto_O)it’s only a bush really
