I have a problem where I was going for a long run in the Defender and it started to smell of heating anti freeze, so I pulled over opened the bonnet and it was steaming a bit, dripping what looked to be anti freeze but I couldn't tell, the temp gauge was reading a bit beyond half way. Love some help to my problem and I can't find a good answer to my problem anywhere!

I think the head gasket has gone, had a better look when I got home and noticed the oil coming from what looks to be the rocker cover.

You are joking there are loads on here.

You telling me nobody anywhere has said.

Have you checked for oil in your coolant or water in your oil?
Have you recently changed the coolant?
Have you checked your water pump works?
Have you checked your thermostat works?
Are you too lazy to search?

One of them is the answer to your problem I'm sure  :D

please check rad for cooling effectively when hot to make sure all rad core is cooling and not just hose side, fill by rmoving rad bung and replace when overflowing same with thermostat bung ,expansion bottle level is no indicator of coolant in engine do this first as 99 times its rad that causes head gasket failure you might be lucky and just rad if no obvious leak ,oil leak is coming from breather hose to rocker box ,temp sender wont read right once water level has dropped this is normal just as heater blowing cold, rad is only bigger enough to cool if its working correctly and especially 300 were they fill and empty on same side ,if its not cooling over entire surface of core it will blow your coolant out

Have you checked for oil in your coolant or water in your oil? checked no bubbles of water on the oil cap and the coolant didn't have any white blobs or anything.
Have you recently changed the coolant? Yup, put some in yesterday
Have you checked your water pump works? Yeah, removed it the blades where moving fine, it looked almost new. also the coolent dropped quite quickly when the engine was hot, then it came out at the bottom where it started dripping
Have you checked your thermostat works? yeah took it out put it in some boiling water and it opened up fine
Are you too lazy to search? No  I looked around and couldn't find a straight answer to my problem

I will try this, just how the leaking is coming from the back of the engine, is troubling, I am starting to think it may be a cracked heater pipe.

Checked rad, looks to be in good order, I think it has been replaced because it looks new. Well I had a good check round and still complexed all the cooling hoses are dry meaning no leaks, checked the heater feed hose and thats fine, had a good look down and the top of the gear box is soked in cooling fluid, the core is fine on the back same with the core plug.

Oh put some anti freeze when engine was cold this morning and it almost instantly started dripping, so how could it get past the thermostat and leak towards the back of the block without the engine being hot?

Thanks guys for helping!

where did it drip from ,engine and system should be full ,themostat open or shut wont effect leak i meant check rad when hot with hand it might look new but that doesnt mean its working properly
