Gents this weekend I am going to swap engines in the p38s question is it any easier to swap just engine or both engine and gearbox I have a good lift so thats not an issue just looking for easiest way both boxes are good so no advantage one way or another
Advice always welcome ta

I did it last time as engine only and it wasnt too bad but was thinking it may be quicker all in one
I would have thought so...

In very very basic terms...

Engine Only:
Unplug Engine from Car
Suspend on Crane
Unbolt all the stupid bolts on the bell housing
Unbolt the fiddly bolts on the TQ/Flexplate et al
Unbolt engine mounts
Carefully wiggle the Engine off the Gearbox input shaft

Engine and Box:
Remove Radiator and gubbins in front (I think)
Unplug Engine from Car
Unplug Gear Box from Car
Suspend on Crane
Unbolt Drive Shafts
Unbolt Engine Mounts
Unbolt Gear Box Mounts
Wiggle Engine and Gearbox out of Engine Bay
No fiddly stupidly positioned bolts you can't get too!!

But that is only a very brief overview....and I have to say, I have not done the job myself!

Remember to swing the Engine and box out of the car, you will need ground clearance to drop the back end of the box down as you slide the engine up and out....

id go for engine only through experience, the eng/box together is heavy and long/unbalanced on crane/hoist and very difficult to clear unless you have some strong mates or a eng crane what will lift over 6ft its suprising how long a p38 box c/w bellhousing is when out & on the floor

Drive shafts :p did you mean prop shafts ;)

you will get the engine/gearbox assembly out well enough as long as you remove the exhaust, crossmember, transfer casing, bonnet and front end(rad etc).

If you do decide engine only then wedge a small block under the torque convertor to support it in the bellhousing whilst the motor is out.

If it does come loose then make sure you gently turn it home before putting the engine back in - otherwise you will knacker the pump.

Last couple of times took engine only with no dramas I do have a good lift that will give 6ft plus but think on this ocassion will stick to engine only seeing as the box is good.
So engine prop and back axle this weekend then next weekend front radius arms and roof liner and doors then carpets keeping the original ashtray tho
