Hi All , anybody tried the Wynn’s oil stop leak additive ? . If so how did it do . Got a drip pretty sure it’s from the oil sump seal . Which is not the normal cork type gasket . But from a tube . Nothing from oil filter etc . Many thanks

in my opinion, anything gloopy enough to stop an oil leak, has a chance of stopping up some of the smaller oilways that might already be narrowed thru age related encrustations
i'd be putting a new gasket on

Hi Kermit_rr thanks for the reply, was reading a few reviews on the
{ oil stop leak } most were good , only saw 1 negative one . Any how have not done a sump gasket etc , when putting the retaining bolts back are they similar to tightening a wheel , as in doing opposite facing bolts if you know what I mean . Once again thanks

Engine stop leak will only work on leaks that are caused by shrinkage of rubber seals or O rings. It won't correct a mechanical leakage problem with a standard paper gasket or split O ring.

If you have a leak, and you know the cause, then it's a 1000 times better to rectify the problem correctly.

If the sump gasket has failed, then you're going to need to replace it.

It's not unheard of for the sump on a FL2 to leak due to a rust hole, so it's worth investigating that too.

Don't do sump bolts up anywhere near as tight as wheel nuts, or you'll break them off. They just need "nipping" up, and maybe another 1/4 turn. ;)

Nice to hear from you again , appreciate the info , just a couple of the bolt heads are covered with oil etc . And the gasket is the stuff out of a squeeze tube etc .

Ok. So you'll need to drain the oil, remove the sump, clean the Old sealer off, and reapply the correct new sealant. Then refit the sump, tightening the sump in a criss cross pattern, so it goes into place flat.

Cheers Nodge68 ,
Thanks for the update .Will have a look for Land Rover gasket seal in a tube etc .

As above for some reason the sump on the FL2 tend to rust out ? so even though the gasket is removed and replaced the sump could have very slight pin holes if so a new sump will be needed.

Many thanks for the info ,Arctic2
there is a small area that has rust etc . Will have a good look .

are u sure it is the sump, and it isn`t oil dripping down from the plastic inlet pipe that runs to the turbo,
just a thought with it being a common fault.saying that I have also had the rusty sump problem and sorted it before it got any worse.
p.s you can tell me to p**s off if you want:)

Hi Ian , ref oil running down plastic inlet pipe is that the one that is quite flat and wide . Runs down and past the oil filter ? If so then no oil on it .I cleaned it off a week or so ago , and still clean and dry . Filter is dry , the oil appears to be coming from around the bolts holding the sump in place . The gasket is the sealer type from a tube . Ref your ps , would not do that mate any advice is appreciated.

no problem mate I have the oil runnlng down the pipe all the time .I just clean it off and carry on.
as for the sump there must be somebody on here who has done it, I am sure somebody was on not long ago.
just can`t remember who it was.

No probs, will have a look through the freelander posts . Though Nodge68 did say how to remove and put the sump back etc .

Have you tried nipping up the bolts that are wet? They might just be loose !
Hi Freelance, yes did that last night there were a around 3 that I could nip up that was in the right place where the oil was . But nothing major as I believe they have a torque setting etc . Not been able to check today . But will check it over again in the morning. Thanks for the reply .

Nothing wrong with a bit of oil floating around the engine bay.

I'm sure there's more on the outside of my L Series than in it.

Helps keeps all the pulleys and tensioners in good condition.
