On the left hand side on the engine (when looking from the front, on the alloy casing), there are two numbers (in different places).

11J85D & 69450H 3.5 efi V8 from a 1986 Range Rover

Are these the engine numbers? :confused:
 
no i dont think so mate i have always found them looking from the front on the right hand side just under the exhaust manifold roughly between the two middle plugs on the very top of the block , you may find you need to clean off the crud to see them properly :) :) .
