Great green Hibernia .
I just washed my hippo for nct(irish mot)tomorrow morning.I went for a drive in the rain. After 15 miles the engine light came on, the speedo stopped at 35 and the rev counter stopped working.I've checked all the fuses (wee, most of them).

If it wasn't so urgent I'd spend a while searching.I have an awful feeling its the turbo. Its revving erattically when I start it up.I revved it up while standing still revved high then voom voom and died.

any ideas welcome.

Sorry and thanx I knew I had the same problem before, just panicked.I searched and found my almost exact same thread from a few months ago.Chaser had advised to check fuse8 and clean earths. So this time I cleaned the earth in front of the steering wheel in the engine bay.Fuse 8 was still intact but I cleaned it with sand paper....All fixed.

Just got to take it for a spin to make sure.
Tanx freelance and Kernige...This will be my 300th post.

Thanx Nor'n Islander.I nearly passed the NCT, hand brake and cork stickers on the number plate earned me a fail.Could have been worse, they could have spotted the worn wishbone ball joint gaiters.I've read N I's thread on replacing them joints,I was not looking forward to that task.

On the way home,3 miles down the road the engine light came on again and rev counter died.I fixed iton the side of the road.I'm not sure what the solution was.Cleaned fuse6 earths, opened and closed some oil soaked wiring connectors.I pumped/bled the fuel filter,it took alot of squeezing to get fuel moving, could be the in tank sender, will check that later.

After each time I'd cleaned and done anything I started it up to see if I'd solved the problem.I'm none the wiser last time I started it light came on rev counter not working,so I revved it high and it sorted itself.

Now i GOT TO SEE WHAT i CAN DO TO FIX THIS HAND BRAKE,oops.I think I might have to cut a bit off the cable spring,if worsse comes to worst.

Passed the NCT tonight, but I still have the problem with the dead rev counter and engine light. It seems to happen when the engine has heated up.I think the rev counter works from the crank position sensor,is that right?...I'll try to remove the b-stard tomorrow.

Not having much luck at the moment are ye!

I'll say go with what freelance says, try some GT85 or WD40 on the connections. If it's oil soaked it will penetrate the oil. The amount of people who make that mistake on bike chains is unbelievable! It totally removes any trace of oil on a bike chain and will dry it up in no time so it does work.

Did you manage to clean your engine bay?

Thanx Adam,no I'm going to leave the engine bay the oil has mostly cleared itself. The rev counter dies when the engine gets hot.I think I might have damaged the crank position sensor wiring when I put the ird back in.Although theres oil on the connectors they all seem clean and dry inside.I will give all the connectors a good spray of WD,but I have a feeling its the cps.I should have a spaere one,if that doesn't work I'll swap the wiring loom.

I saw in anything goes you went back to Blighty Adam.I hope you had a good easter.

As for luck...170k miles...and a freelander.I count myself very lucky. And 2 years nct..1year insurance and getting away with no car tax for another month...wuhoo.

Worst bit with the electronics is it's such a pig to find where the fault is!

Aye i headed back to homeland for the weekend. Had a good weekend, saw friends, my mam and dad, (one of) my sister and the little'uns.

Musn't have liked the change in water though, had my head in the toilet at 2am the morning i was flying back. Either the water or my mums cooking anyways.

Don't go and buy Mays LandRover Monthly, i picked a copy up at liverpool airport to keep me entertained on the plane. I'll have to drop it and your others off for ya some time.

I think I've got it sorted.I changed the crankshaft position sensor. The one that was in there was covered in oil,I cleaned it,put it back in and was half way into refitting the exhaust manifold. Then my dad arrived and said I should have used the spare one,so thats what I did.Took it for a 15 mile spin and all's ok.

Next job,change dodgy thermostat.
