can anyone help with my 1999 dse has an "engine disabled press remote" message i have changed the battery on both remote and car. message did say press remote or key code so i entered the code with the key in the drivers door but the indicator lights only flashed when i turned the key to the unlock side not the lock. tryed this loads of times and the key code lock out message has never come up. the book says if you put more than 3 wrong codes this will come up. so i think there is some thing wrong with the door lock switch. help:confused:

First question, have you replaced your RF receiver or know of the previous owner replacing the RF receiver from the original defective part number AFR1953 to the newly revised YWY500170?

Knowing that part AFR1953 is incredibly bad and recognises every RF signal under the sun, its possible that its receiving phantom signals either from the key fob or from some other RF source could be disabling your engine as it did mine.

hi adam can you tell me were to look for the rf receiver and will it have a part number on it
thanks dave

No point looking as it doesn't have any part number on it. If its been replaced it will have been replaced after 2004 (that's when LR realised it was defective and didn't work) and you should have an invoice for it as part of your service history.

i have a full history so i will look when i gat home. if not been done any idea of cost
thanks dave

Sounds similar to my problem of inputting the code via lock.Lock cant be working properly if only flashes lights and bleeps when turned in one direction?
Check lock has rods connected to it, and they move freely

£140 odd quid......but if it is the RF receiver it will transform the car instantly.....the battery wont drain...wont become immobilised, keys work from longer distance, electrical performance will improve.

Hi - Adamforeman - does the reciever need to be programmed into the car at all or is it a straight replace one for the other jobby?

Nope it's a straight swap out, BUT you must ensure the battery is completely and fully charged before doing so. Otherwise you will get phantom error messages on the dashboard and you will need to put it on a testbook to clear them.....which is more money!

Hi
I Have exactly the same thing happening with my 98 P38 HSE Autobiography.
Could some one give me some pointers on how to diagnose and find the RF receiver please.

500dave you described the same thing that I have happen to me tonight..
I too have my EKA number went to the land rover dealer near me today and looked it up for me:)
Entered in the door per owners manual with no luck at all...

Thanks for any pointers as I'm totally stuck at the moment..

Cheers

Just to let you know, the RF receiver will never show up on a testbook as faulty as it isn't faulty as such but defective i.e. doesn't do the job it was designed to perform.

So each time you ask jolly old Land Rover to test your car to see if there are any faults it comes up 100% perfect when it isn't.

A good RR independent garage should know about the RF receiver issue, shame I can't say the same for official dealers as mine hadn't got a clue to the point they made me sign a waiver with regards to the RF receiver not curing my problem.......it did!

The RF receiver is the Achilles heel of the P38 and once you know about it and replace it with YWY500170, it becomes a different car to own.

I have been locked out three times at car parks fitted with RF CCTV systems before replacing it. Now, once it has been replaced, and parking at teh same places, I'm trouble free.

Hi Adamforeman
Is the RF receiver under the right side of the parcel shelf (Drivers side)
How do I remove it?

Cheers

Hi Adamforeman

That's exactly where it is. It should be connected to the power and aerial. Unplug and replace. Mine was replaced at the same time I had mine in a garage for the same reason...disabled engine immobilised. Cost me three lots of testbooks and even then they hadn't got a clue why it was draining the battery or immobilised itself.

Some thieving ignorant garages are even telling the owners that they need a new BECM at the cost of £1500 as that's the cause. Even though the testbook says the BECM is OK.

This is some of the nonsense and ignorance that you find at your local dealer.....some do it deliberately and change the RF receiver over at the same time and pocket the money.

hi rolfy
my local landrover man took it to his place put it on his test book and said it was all good. put the key in the drivers door, pushed the lock button turned it to lock (anti clock ) for 5 seconds and it all sprank in to action. still charged me £ 90.00. but not bad for atow in, hook up and cleadr the faults. put key in door, push lock button, turn to lock, count to 5 sill with button pushed, turn back to center let button go and remove key. push unlock button and all should be good!!!!!!!!!

hope this works and saves you £90.00

Hi Dave
I'm going to replace my RF receiver today as I do have the older unit at the moment and I'm sure that this is causing my battery drain and a lot of my problems..

Thanks for the procedure for the re-activation of the key phob's I was under the impression that you had to press and hold the lock button before putting the key into the drivers door and while still holding the lock button turn the key to right and hold it there for 10 seconds, return to centre remove key then finally let go of the lock button????

Did you watch the guy do the Key phob reactivation procedure???
What is the correct one as i'm a bit confused?

Thanks for all the help!!!

Dave,

Did you read my post where I said when you put it on a testbook everything will come back fine even with the defective AFR1953 part installed?

If you haven't replaced the RF receiver it will be a matter of time before your going to be locked out, immobilised and need flat trucking back home again to a garage.

You have been informed and warned....

Hi All
Ahhhhhhhhh
Installed new RF Receiver today STILL DON'T WORK!!

I have no central locking at all can lock and unlock drivers door with key and thats it, When I pull up the lock buttons on the rear doors still cant open them.
When I turn the drivers door lock to lock position (Counter clock ) the indicators flash and the alarm arms.. When I unlock alarm is disarmed but no other doors unlock, But can hear the lock mechanism doing something in the offside rear door.

I removed door card from the drivers door all rods connected OK and seem to move OK could the door lock Assembly be bad BUT also still cant start the bloody thing!!

AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

Thanks

Rolfy

Hi All

Thanks

Where did you buy your RF receiver from? I hope from LR directly as the RF receivers don't have part numbers and unscrupulous people are selling their old ones or have old stock.

Secondly from what you say sounds like more than the RF receiver. Battery drain, lock outs and engine immobilisation are definitely the dreaded RF receiver issue.

But what your now describing sounds like two possibilities:-

You changed the RF receiver without charging the battery to maximum first causing errors in the BECM security system.

or secondly the door electrics are shot and need investigating and replacing.
