was thinking about maybe getting a 90/defender and would like to know what the difference's were between the 2.5td motor and the 200tdi motors.
cheers.

2.5td was designed in about 1604 and has similar power to 3 blackbirds taking off at once.

200tdi is a next generation version and is up to about 9 seagulls.

200 and 300 are the engines of choice amongst the landy community and 200s from dicoveries are cheap. I have a 2.5TD and its just fine and for me, reliable but if someone gave me a 200 I'd replace it.

The tdi is a direct injection engine, whereas the earlier ones were indirect injection types, with a separate pre-combustion chamber in the cylinder head.

By and large the TDI engines are capable of better performance at the sort of rpm range that is useful in Landies these days.

The 200 tdi engine is a super piece of kit. Minimal electrics, reliable, decent output, and good to drive.

Totally agree Charles, sept the 300 can be just as useful too.Given decent parts backup,(service bits) I reckon they are about as good as it will ever get for a utility 4wd.That is,output, reliability, rebuildabilty and just about any thing else too.
(Now stand back and watch all the sado's come out with all the oppositions cr-p,sorry kit.) Theres not much wrong with a TDI except the fuel we use in them. They do everything most people need.
