2.5 TD. I've just had the embarrassing pleasure of recovering my own car. Started fine, then after about a quarter of a mile the engine died. It does start after about 20 seconds of turning over, runs fine and then dies. This is accompanied by a ticking noise from the front of the engine.
Any ideas? Thanks, Ian.

Check the lift pump.

Could it be related to this problem which I had at the start of the month?

Are you getting the MIL lamp coming on at any stage other than when ignition is switched on then going out after a few seconds? Diag may tell you a better tale, but use good stuff Nanocom preferably. You can guess for ever. Sounds like lift pump is either weak or dead. Look at how to section for how to check it for function. Do you have any air in the clear fuel pipe?

Ok checked pump using the relay 12 method. No action at all. Tank is now half full of diesel. Starts eventually as before, runs better but still dies if you take your foot off the throttle or blip it. Holding at a steady 1500 rpm no problem. ???

If it's the original lift pump they have an NRV in them. If the lift pump is dead injection pump maybe having difficulty sucking fuel past it. Change the lift pump.

OK so I have a cracked fuel filter housing and a fuel leak from the top of the tank. Oh, and the belt tensioner bracket at the front of the engine snapped this morning when I was starting it and the exhaust back box needs to be replaced.

Personally I'm just relieved I got into the workshop and backed it up the MOT inspection bay ramp and onto a four poster before it overheated with no power steering.

The lift pump does work but I'm going to replace it as that could be the source of the leak and the original is 20 years old. I'll look at the brake pipes too when the tank is down tomorrow.

In the process of doing exactly the same jobs. Finished the brake pipes yesterday, what a bastard.I'd already done the axle pipes but when I dropped the tank I found the front to rear pipes were fecked as well. There are two and they are both just under 4 meters in length!!! Hope your leak isn't the pump to filter pipe, mine was rotted away (car had been standing for over 4 years), it's mega expensive.
