whilst driving the freelander today it decided to cut out on me so after dipping the clutch and rolling to a stop the engine was just about still running at idle but on the verge of dying so let it idle and settle for a minute or so,
blipped the throttle a couple times and it seemed fine so carried on driving, a few minutes later the same happened but this time when i pulled over the engine has completely stopped, started up again without to much problem (maybe took a few seconds longer to start) this seems to be happening all the time now so the car is un-driveable,

any ideas whats causing the problem?

its a 1.8 petrol 1999

Any sign of overheating? Is it losing oil or water?

does the engine sound normal or strange when you are trying to restart it?

no signs at all of overheating, no water or oil loss, engine sounds just like normal when trying to restart, may be just me and have nothing to do with it but im sure the fuel pump sounds a bit more noticeable than normal, just a little louder maybe but not a lot

Loose fuse, relay, battery terminal slack? check em all.. Been there, Seen that fixed it with the ex disco.

I had the same problem / symptoms some time ago.
I removed the fuel pump and renewed the fuel filter cleaning the pump gauzes at the same time ( which were surprisingly filthy )
I'm afraid it made little difference and the problem returned shortly afterwards .
I bit the bullet and fitted a new fuel pump assembly and the problem has never reoccured.

When you turn the key to Ignition ON (not start) do you hear the fuel pump buzzing? Is it constant? When the car wont start do you still hear the pump? I'd go with Dan's suggestion first

Just noticed today that when the car is playing up the sound from the fuel pump is different to normal, instead of a constant hum its like a louder than normal pulsing hum if that makes sense,
