My 2000 Discovery TD5 started cutting out this week. A garage has said there is a problem with oil in the ECU and a problem with injector 4. Is this a common problem, easy to fix or is this going to be a nightmare and cost me a fortune?

Oil in the red plug to the engine ECU is a very well known problem on the Td5 engine, particularly the Disco Td5.
Before you go delving into "injector problems", you would be well advised to replace the injector harness. Check out this page for further information:-

It should cost about 50 or 60 quid for parts, including a new gasket for the rocker cover.
You will have to allow some time for the existing oil contamination to drain out of the external loom between the ECU and the cylinder head.

Update: Had the loom changed and plug cleaned, engine still cut out. Have had the fuel pump changed and it’s cut out again but this time the “M and S” lights have come on.

It’s getting frustrating now.

As mentioned previously, it can take a while for any residual oil to make it's way out of the loom, so even though you might have replaced the injector loom, there may still be contamination in the section between the ECU and cylinder head.

You said it was properly diagnosed which means to read live crank sensor input and battery voltage while cranking if it doesnt start and no codes logged

Next thought is gearbox. We’ve been under again and there is Oil seaping from plug and the chassis wet. Thinking as it only cuts out when warm that there is no oil in gear box which is causing it to cut out.

The engine would not cut out due to lack of oil in the gearbox nor the M+S flashing while the transmission oil temp warning should come on and eventually loose drive also for the M + S there must be a fault code logged in the transmission ECU

I’m stumped. It’s with a Landrover garage so hopefully he can find out what the hells wrong. ☹️

Engine cut out on me whilst driving along motorway yesterday and then it cut out on the Landrover guy today whilst stopped at traffic lights. Left it a while and it went again but only for a few miles.

last time i had similar it was injector washers

last time i had similar it was injector washers

Finally got it home. Seems it was a combination of the Injector loom needing replaced, fuel pump was replaced and injector washers. Seems the problem was between all 3 of those happening at once.

Thanks guys
