Hello,

I daresay this question has been asked before, so please forgive my posting it once again.

I'd like to clean the engine of my series 3 and am trying to work out the best method of doing this. So far these methods seem to keep popping up:
  • Steam cleaning
  • GUNK and hot water
I imagine all will need that familiar cleaning agent 'Elbow Grease', but I would like to know which method is the more appropriate or any alternatives for that matter?

Many thanks indeed,

E.

if you are going to do it, do it properly. gunk is good so is jizer but there are better makes to be had, but you cant beat a good steam cleaner, i use a degreaser by spraying the engine all over leave it soak in for about 30 mins then steam clean it, but make sure all air intake pipes are blocked ie polly bags secured to pipes, and dont have the engine running whilst steam cleaning, as for petrol engines use polly bags to cover the carb/s dizzy cap to stop water entering the engine. regards js

That really is helpful, thank you. I'll do as you say about covering up the necessary parts. I was leaning towards a steam cleaning, so I think you may have firmly tipped the scales in favour of it.

I don't off-road the landy, all that needs cleaning is the 27 years of engine muck that hasn't previously been touched!

Many thanks once again

E.

Dunno what they call it but I got some stuff in a squeezy bottle from halfrauds, not my usual place, but its really good, I recently sold a marine gearbox that had sat round for 20 years, sprayed it with this cack, squirted it with the hosepipe and it looked a lot better, fetched 150 quid on eblag.

Nah it wasnt Gunk, halfrauds poxy own brand stuff, just said 'engine cleaner', worked really well, made yer hands sting though, guess its not enviro freindly.
