Engine Bay Under Tray

Hello all.

When i got my FL it had no under tray, or what ever the term is. But after a close call off road i think i need to get hold of one.

Do they differ between petrol and diesel and from year to year?

I have an 03 TD4.

Just as an aside, the problem came to light when going through water about a foot to two feet deep with unseen rocks being flicked up by the tyres.

Any good advice welcome

If i Manage to get one from the local scrapy, will it matter if it's of a petrol FL?

I think all FL1 guards will fit. The later ones had plastic ears, as opposed to the earlier ones which had separate ears. The ears are the side bits.

To be honest, deep water is a risk with any vehicle. Water contains crap like sand/clay/mud etc which plays havoc with oil seals/bearings etc. I keep out of it these days when oft road if I can. That's advice given by a tratterer some years ago who follows the same rule.

The standard guard needs strengthened as it's mainly plastic in the middle. There's a sheet of metal on the inside but it's too thin. Plenty of examples of how to strengthen them online.

Thanks for that info. With that i think i can feel a project coming on. It will of course involve heavy guage stuff and the power folder at work.

Now! In what, Aly or steel?

Steel is stronger. I think peeps have used 1 or 2 sheets of 3mm so they can bend it. If you have the kit to bend it's a lot easier. The weight is a problem when you need to take it oft/re-fit it. My man tec guard is aluminuinmuinm and 8 mm thick.

There are different bumper mounting points between the various changes of design in the Freelanders.

The pre 01MY undertray front bumper mounts are definitely different locations to the 01MY on undertrays

You might wanna look at other underside protection as well if you're needing a sump guard, admittedly though the sumps the most important and first thing to protect

Hello all.

Thaks for all your replies and helpful suggestions. As i do have access to sheet metal shop tools, there's no problem Knocking one up.

I think i'll go down the route of modding an LR tray. That should be ok for what i do.
