I've got a 3.9 V8 1997 Disco, which has started backfiring and showing very uneven power when accelerating or going up hills. It's been back to the garage four times now, who have cleaned and then replaced the sparkplugs, and put new injectors in. They've now increased the fuel going into the engine, which has ensured the power loss is less pronounced, but not solved the problem. There's also a faint smell of burning oil.

When it gets really bad, the car starts juddering as though you're in too high a gear, then eventually loses all power. The garage cleans the plugs, and it's OK for another week or two before deteriorating.

We're in Burundi, and have already tried the only decent garage in town, so now out of options. Any ideas?

thanks,
dave

So it is deffo OK after cleaning the plugs? So the plugs are fouling as s symptom....well for s start, if it is doing the problem now, take the plugs out and have a look at them. Based on the colour and condition that would decide what line to go down.

Pull the lead off the air flow meter. If it runs better, you have your problem.

Check the tank isn't full of grit, too. Sounds like it's running lean to me, so I'd suspect fuel supply, not plugs etc.

Last week off roading I had an issue, car wouldn't run all day, then magically did, but backfired and lost power up hills etc.

The ignition timing was to blame, have this checked, sounds similar. Yours should be 6 degrees advanced iirc, but a little more doesn't harm! If it runs well then it's happy.

Oh and the plugs are usually black/wet on an early v8 so it rarely helps to check their colour etc...

Cheers.

Well I'm suprised mate!

Mine runs "great" for a Rover, but the plugs are always sooty.

This I assume is due to the wasted fuel system that the EFi uses.

Ok not always wet, but sometimes after cranking/non start.

Cheers.
