It looks as though my project has come to the end it failed mot on various things (will post when get list car still at garage) and I've decided not to plough anymore money into it ! Unless it cheap quote Its had new MAF / BATTERY / FUEL PUMP / COIL PACK / ALT / 2 x DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS. Garage pricing up how much to put it through MOT but will more than likely put it up for sale for sensible offers for someone to use for parts or carry on with it. 96 4.6 V8

yep agree.
i quote 70% less than the garage...if you DIY with advise from here,.

bring it on. the p38 is very DIY for MOT..

Right got list (sorry 4 spelling mistakes ) :- abs lamp on been told this is modulator which I've got another to fit / n/s side repeater loose (lug has broke easy fix ) / front 2 rear all brake pipes corroded (poss not so easy for me to do ) / off side rear shock absorber detached / and finally exhaust emissions excessive ( fast idle test failed on co / 2nd fast idle test failed on co / natural idle test passed). Been told this could be the rings need doing ? There are advisories n/s and o/s air suspension unit slightly detoriated o/s front suyspension slight play lower ball joint and slight oil leak poss sump gasket. Haven't got price from garage yet want to try to some myself but emissions causing concern. Your wise thoughts people would be helpful.

Brake pipes are easy to make, a pain to bleed on your own though. I always use kunifer brake pipes as they don't corrode (if marquees used these from factory we'd all be saved a lot of grief down the line). A bit harder to work with than copper, but tbh worth it.
Emissions is a tricky one. Most common trick to get through is to take the vehicle for a low gear, high speed blast for 30 or so minutes. Should bake off any crud from the cat which will get you through the test.

Cheers bix once I back next wk will start to look at things my parents have got a pit in their garage so will be bit easier for me may have to find someone with bit of knowhow to give hands on help. Also ill have to buy flaring kit etc to make pipes ? That car hasn't had good run 4 awhile due to being off rd having other work done so will need to take for blast perhaps I know it does kick out abit of blueish smoke when throttle given some but does clear !

If it does it after ticking over or after throttle off coasting when throttle is opened more than likely valve stem oil seals.

Is this something that requires major surgery ? Like I said before If I kick it down it will puff out some smoke but if you drive it gently its fine

As long as it's just little it will be fine. But stem seals are a bitch to do with heads on. Just be aware of it that is all.

Ah yes, I forgot about the flaring kit. There are many types, you can get the smaller in hand kits which do the job but are fiddly, with kunifer I favour a vice held tool. But for 30 odd squids they aren't prohibitive expensive.
