Electronic Stability Program? What's that all about?

I keep seeing 'Electronic Stability Program' listed as a safety feature on Rangey adverts. Mine also had this listed on the advert when I bought it.

Is this just describing the automatic lowering of the suspension over 50 mph or is there more to it than that?

I seem to recall reading that on the Disco 2s (with rear air susp), it actually consisted of a hydraulic ram on the anti roll bar or something to help control body roll on cornering but pretty sure my Rangey hasn't got this.

Thoughts (preferably relevant) anyone?

I think it is an enhancement to the ABS whereby the brakes are applied selectively to limit wheel spin. It works by comparing the rotational speed of one wheel to another. If one or two wheels on one side for example are rotating faster than the others braking is applied. This is intended to keep the vehicle running straight.

What adverts have you been reading? I've never heard of Land Rovers having Electronic Stability Program. They do have Dynamic Stability Control, this helps keep control of the vehicle during violent (emergency?) manoeuvres, by reducing the power and applying the brakes to individual wheels to keep the car stable. Many modern cars have it, under a variety of names, and I beleieve it will become a legal requirement from 2012.They have a wide range of other systems to help keep the vehicle under control under all circumstances.

Ive seen that alot and the P38s never had ESP. The disco2's have some thing called ACE which helps keep the body level when cornering.

The p38 have traction control on the rear wheels <99 and full traction crontrol >99. ESP uses brakes to help keep the car cornering rather than sliding.

ACE was, I think, 'Active Cornering Enhancement', on the Disco 2

I have one of the original P38 sales brochures and it doesn't mention any stability enhancement, electronic or otherwise.

ESP is extra sensory power, meaning that as soon as you think you have cleared all the faults and fixed all the broken bits, it senses this and fcuks something else up just to keep you on yer toes!!!

Hee hee. That sounds about right.

Just about every P38 on ebay has this listed as a feature. I was wondering if I had missed something, but evidently not.

So my 98 has only got traction control on the rear? Bah. Still, it seems to work ok. Went laning at the weekend in it on road tyres - no probs at all.

ESP,dont no have just had a quick look at technical reveal book given out at launch and no mention of it ...However i have read that high end ranges do have ESP and have read that 2 or 3 times in different books.... will have a good read up later ??

You might notice it doesn't say EAS!
I'd say that as the P38 is the only car out there with that acronym (or is it an initialism) the dealers just get it mixed up with all the modern cars with ESP.

The P38 definitely does not have any from of ESP.
EAS, ABS, TC, SRS, GEMS, MEMs, yeah but no ESP :)

Hey Guy,

Yeah it appears that way, I've checked all the owners manuals upto 2002 just to be sure but we'd certainly have come across some fault with it at this stage if it was there at all :)
Like I said, I wouldn't trust a car dealer ad at the best of times, through in a car that even LR dealers have trouble understanding and there's bound to be mistakes.

It's a bit detailed.

Thanks for the link, its very good and well orth a read.. However some points are wrong ,EG under 30th Anniversary it sats 30 were made in wimbledon green with wimbledon green seats??? all left the factory in wimbledon green and the seats were classic green as were the carpets..
However i to have looked at many books today and no ESP,nut as i said before i have read it in some tech litt somewhere, before i got my 2001 Anniversary..But they to may well be wrong, its just that cars older than 2000 and only 25% of the price have it??
