anyone else had this idea?

basically what I'm thinking is a straight swap of the vcu for an electromagnetic clutch assembly.

under normal conditions, it would be free/open, giving no rear drive

if stuck, simply stop, flick a switch on, and hey presto! 4wd!

having a bit of trouble finding a strong enough one at the moment, but is there any reason it wont work? (space might be an issue)

any other thoughts? i cant see much sense in having a part fail every few years. especially as if not caught early, mass damage is likely

would be on or off like diff lock-would be susceptible to wind up

the main problem with early one was the front wheels been driven slightly faster than rear to give you front wheel drive feeling ,vcu shoul last longer on later model with equal drive ,they where a fault on rr but took 10 years to show

ah well at least im not the only one to think it could be a good idea.
just a shame LR bollixd up the ratio's first time round, and havent really told anyone they have to replace the VCU after 70,000 ish.

the vcu idea isn't a bad one, but to have it fail without much indication, untill the ird is bollixed too? well thats just stupid.

they could have at least worked out a standard test, to be carried out every 10,000 miles or so.

How about removing the vcu, and putting a slilding pipe over the props? Slide across to join the props for 4wd. Slide onto one prop only to give 2wd.

There wouldn't be any. So I guess the strain may kill the system quicker than a vcu on lsd (the drug).

But it would work if only in 4x4 mode on soft surfaces? Suppose it's a nad idea. Oh well.
