back again!

finally wired in my roof lights this weekend and working on a relay diagram from a previous post got everything up and running on a seperate switch, which could be run with the engine not running.

got up this morn to take the car to work and could smell some elec. burning :( the lights AND radio no longer work with the ignition off. when the ignition is ON the radio works and when i flick the switch the lights blink on and then go immediately off. i can hear the relays ticking and havent investigated further because ive only just realised this!

ive taken a feed directly from the battery via the fuse box (25amp) to the relay. switch is in the central dash (LR 90) and small feed from other side of switch comes from the fag lighter. ive used 2 relays (4 55w lights you see!) and both are earthed. all lights are earthed, the switch is even earthed.

could someone narrow it down for me please?

my guess is a short somewhere near the batt. which may explain why nothing works without the ignition.

wrong?

cheers folks,

G

why is the switched earthed??? it needs two wires...one in ;live, and one out live when switched on. if you have earthed the switch ( as in vehicle earth)then thats yer problem.

i beleive its only earthed so that that little red LED lights up when the application is on... i have one going into the relay and one tapped into the fag lighter as my small feed to the relay.

had a chat with someone in work, and they think it could be the continuous live. due to the radio not wanting to stay on with ignition off. it it possible that ive fried the entire circuit?

G

take the led earth off, just to elminated it.
is the fuse blowing? if not then you have a short between batt and fuse box.
if yer fag lighter fuse has blown then yer fault may be in yer switchin wire.
finally remove the relays and check for a short between the pins and earth. then come back with yer findings.

cheers slob, im guessing at this stage its my initial wiring at the batt end due to the ****ing up of other electrics. ive just checked my lights and my sides and hazards work without the ignition, so maybe its not the continuous circuit?

who knows.

cheers, anyone else want to chip in?

Slob,

had a look at lunchtime. the fag lighter fuse has blown. would this be caused by all the connections being close together? whats the best way of isolating all my connections? and will my radio work again with the ignition off? the radio and the lights are the only things not working with the ignition off.

cheers!

G

best way to isolate yer connections is to use heat shrink, have you put a new fuse in yet? it may be that while you was ferlkin about you accidently shorted something

no not yet, im going out there right now to pull the dash off and have a look. i think that when i pushed them all back in to the centre dash something musta touched something and fecked the system. it worked last night when i left it! nevermind...

...be back shortly with my findings :)

aye ah had that in me jag.. bloody leccy seat dint work..took out center console to have a shoeftee, replaced fuse and it worked. stuffed it all back together and it dint work...took it all out and had a real close look, found a wire was being caught when the center was in place. rerouted wire and now me seat works again.

ok i pulled the dash off and it all looked fine, i taped them up good and replaced the fuse. its all working again. when i went to put the dash back something sparked at the switch and i blew another fuse.i think that the wire going back to the relay and small feed from fag touched and blew it. replaced fuse again, more tape, and back in ~(carefully)~ hopefully it will be ok in the morn.

cheers for your help slob, your a star.
