just use a meter to check each wire from one end to the other and expect the broken wire to be where there is flex and friction.
If you are checking the BCU pins, is it not possible to check across the ones that go to the mechanism to see it the polarity switches when you work the switch in both directions, even if only for a nanosecond? Wouldn't this prove there is a short to earth?
If OP only hears a click with the switch in one direction, could this be a relay on the BCU working in that one direction but another one not? Are there relays on the BCU? (Shows how little I know.)

HAVE YOU CHECKED CABLES FOR DAMAGE WHERE THEY EXIT THE DOOR PILLAR TO DOOR
