help...i've a 2004 freelander td4 hse, the electric mirrors sort of work, but don't...they make the noise of working and the glass moves when you use the lever inside, but the whol blcak casing that they are in flaps about when driving at any sort of speed, very annoying, as even when the glass is tilted to its widest angle, they still move and flap about. i have tried taking the case off, but only get so far...is there maybe something broken off or come loose inside....???

Same thing with mine when I first got the car. Turned out that previous punters, not realising that the mirrors fold back with an electric motor, had folded the mirrors by pushing them and disengaged the gears.
Using the switch to fold/unfold the mirrors put the system back in gear and stopped the mirrors flopping.

I stripped mine down and there is a worm gear that's used to turn the mirror and it was completely mangled and worn down.... I'm sure the actual part would cost less than £5 but since you can't get it on its own, it's £95 for a new mirror!! I hate things like that, it's such a waste of an otherwise good mirror.

I've got the same problem with my n/s mirror....just waiting for some dry weather to get out andd take it apart.....

Only option I've found is to replace, my O/S & N/S works as should, mirrors moves and the whole units fold in and out for parking, anyhow now and then the n/s will still move etc when unfolding but makes a loud clicking noise for a few seconds so I thought I would remove and have a look, this is when you find out that you cant strip the mirror down the motor is well protected and bonded into place, I've yet to figure out how to remove the bonding.

Why mention this, it's the same issue just with a slightly diff reason, overall its the motor parts become worn down making the fold option less tight than required / or allowing the wind to push back the mirror as the motor is failing to hold in place due to the same reasons - worn part.

You will notice on the bottom of the mirror is a circle, once removed you can see 4 small screws these hold the motor in place, dont bother to remove these. Take the mirror off the door and you will see the wire coming from the unit is bonded in. If you can get past this then you might have a chance at having a look at the motor/parts and seeing if you can tighten anything but I dought you can, it's all controlled by the motor.

Hand in pocket time or glue the housing up so it cant move....

Dozy previous owner had done the same to mine! I had black insulation tape on mine. I left it untill I returned to Spain. Cut it all off today, moved the switch and hey presto power fold mirrors live again. Amazing how many people don't know they have them or think they have broken them. My friend who had had his for over a year, a very clued up guy when it comes to cars. Had to be shown, never twigged that was what they were. Now he is very happy having discovered an extra toy.
