Hi can anyone help,I live in sweden and have just bought a lhd 2002 td5 auto which i am taking back to sweden.I want to fit a egr bypass kit and a decat pipe, will this affect the emissions ? I will register it on swedish plates after 6 months or so but not sure if i do these mods whether it will go through their mot test or not. Any info would be appreciated as this is my first landrover and i am trying to learn all i can
Thanks

You would be OK with UK MOT - I think Landrover were gearing up for emissions on the US and wider EU market - but not sure about Swedish. If there are no Swedish members here thats tried it you should check with a local MOT station. It will depend upon what the regulations were in 2002 - not now.

Hope this helps

Thanks it does ,i will have find some swedish info. If its going to be a problem
do you know if having an ecu remap without doing a decat or egr bypass would be of any benefit ?
Thanks

A remap will definitely still improve the performance of your TD5 without the De-EGR/De-cat.

Just keep the old cat and if any bother at the test just fit it back on and remove after the test.

Thanks will take off Cat and keep, any idea whether i should touch the EGR ?

Normally speaking a De-EGR will if anything clean up your exhaust emissions.

Because your car is likely to a EU3 version, the EGR valve is the larger type which obstructs the inlet air flow. Removing it and replacing it with the "trumpet" normally supplied with these kits will improve airflow.

It's unlikely to be a massive power boost but most owners notice an improvement in engine smoothness and sometimes a slight improvement in mpg.

The best reason for doing this mod is that on the one hand the manufacture says you need to change the air filter regularly to ensure a flow of good clean air, then on the other hand pumps dirty unfiltered exhaust fumes in via the EGR system - it's nonsense. Only required by the manufacturers to meet their obligations, not the subsequent owners needs at all.

Do both mods, have cleaner emissions and better performance, then do the remap and..................................ENJOY.

Hi just to let you know i have a 2001 td5 auto and have done exactly what you are thinking of. Removed the EGR valve and fitted a bypass kit , De-catted the exhaust and had Mike from Dynachip re-map the car, the difference is fantastic . Better power smoother running and yes an increase in MPG.Well worth it.

so is it a significant increase in mpg?

I've done loads of them on TD5 and TDi cars and the increase is not sufficient to justify the De-EGR. The De-cat mod does improve mpg by perhaps 8%??

You would do it because generally speaking, the engine runs better.

On a yr 2000 TD5 you won't have a catted exhaust downpipe, so your best bet would be De-EGR then remap - and drive with a light pedal !!!

If it's an auto, getting into TC lock-up, as quickly as possible helps, as does autobox roll on when you take your foot off the gas.

sorry `thebiglad`. i should have been more specific. i was referring to the mpg increase due to the re-map.
your right in that i did not notice an increase in mpg by removing the egr.
the increase i have managed since getting the td5 is down to driving style and keeping on top off maintenance.
i now get about 24 as opposed to 20 when i first got it.
not great, but then i new what to expect when i got it.

You are absolutely right the keeping on top of maintenance is a big deal with these cars.

I've had several auto TD5's and with all of them I reckon to get overall about 29mpg - more on a run of course.

Motorway at 65-70mph, A roads at 55-60. Keep the tyre pressures up; replace the air filter much more often than LR says; I use fully synth transmission oils.

Cheers
Dave

Ps After remap on my auto TD5's I didn't find a worthwhile improvement in mpg - just drivability.
