Evening all!

Spent a while at work last week making up a nice little plate to slide in between the EGR to blank it off and attempted to fit it today.

As most of you have probably found, the bolts on the EGR valve have rusted badly and seized. Seeing as I need the car for running around this week, thought I'd leave it for now because knowing my luck.....

Anyway, I have pulled the plug off of the solenoid in the mean time and it has made a definite difference when starting from cold.

My question: does the EGR valve allow some recirculation at all times, hence why people blank them off, and increase the amount of recirculation when the solenoid is energised? When would the EGR become operational, is it just while warming or are there certain running conditions where it would be called for as well?

The reason I ask is that there wouldnt be any point in messing about with a plate if straight removal of the plug achieves the same thing!

Any light would be gratefully received!

In theory if you just disconect it "Jobs a good un"!
What usualy happens over time is that the EGR valve get's so full of crap it can't close fully or just sticks open.

Unplugging it will only stop the solenoid opening which in turn allows the vacuum to open the EGR valve. Usually the EGR gets gummed up and sticks open with the gunge. The only real solution IMHO is to take it all off, blank it off and chuck it in the bin. PS mine is 11 yrs old and took 20 mins to do.

Thanks Jason & James :)

I see exactly where you are coming from here - I have just been back out to my little treasure and given the whole issue a liberal coating of Plus Gas (smells so much nicer than WD-40! ;)) and will see how I get on in the morning!

Now you mention it, it's bound to be gunked up because of whats going through it, looking forward to having a look...

I have a feeling this is the first step of several in an attempt to make the damned thing tow properly.

Thanks again

Chris

Hey all,

I tried the bolts this morning and they did come undone, I think I was quite lucky.

I was absolutely astounded at the quantity of gunk inside the pipework so I went further and whipped out the intercooler after fitting the blank. Took this out in the garden and cleaned it out with petrol and again I was totally astounded with the crud that came out. I'm starting to think that the intercooler should really be called a gunk trap on vehicles with EGR fitted.

Had a peek into the inlet manifold too. As many others have said on here, thats another job on the list of things to do, clean inlet manifold!

Took for a test drive after putting everything back together and I'm very pleased with the result :):):)

My own personal conclusion to add to everybody elses: THE EGR IS CRAP! GET RID OF IT!

I'm now going to look into an Allisport cooler and maybe some other options because the thing really does struggle with towing, although I don't know how it will perform now I've cleaned it all out. Have only towed relatively light loads so far, but the day will soon come when I need to take my 750kg worth of Irish Draft + weight of horse box out somewhere!

Thanks again

Chris
