egr clean

hi, i was going to clean the egr valve on my freelander the other day, started stripping it off the car then i got a bit unsure of how to disconnect it from a metal pipe that was attached to the egr. This pipe has a clamp round it which i loosened off, but to me it looked like it was moulded around. Should i have just prised it open with a screw driver? i wasnt sure so put it back together.

I have bought a caravan and been reading that cleaning egr improves performance for pulling caravans. Does anyone no of anything elso that can be done, that is cheap to do?

did mine last week just loosen the clip right off then ease of with screwdiver should be fine

I would clean the tube out as well

Hi , worth doing the blanking mod , and cleaning the intake out that will be full of the crud the same as your egr valve , have a look at the sticky on it . And have you done the crankcase breather mod

Can confirm that removing the EGR (I replaced mine with an Allisport kit), fitting silicone hoses and fitting the BMW crankcase breather makes quite a difference!

Does the intake real get as bad as the egr as that's one thing I haven't got round to doing yet???

my whole intake system was filthy, hopefully its slightly cleaner now than it was a few weeks ago when i changed everything

Nah didnt have time to do that, took my an age to get the left hand intercooler hose done that I gave up doing anything else by the time that was finished!

Yeah not the best to get to changed mine a couple of years ago the old one had rubbed through then split so changed them for artel silicon ones and made sure they wouldn't rub on anything again..

Do the EGR blanking mod as suggested. I tow a caravan as well and it makes a hell of a difference, also do the BMW crank case breather mod.

It'll cost you a can of carb cleaner, toothbrush and all the time and effort + god awful mess of cleaning, so if you can afford it you may as well just buy a bypass kit and be done with it. I did notice mine pulls away more eagerly with the bypass fitted and some people have taken the trouble to work out the improved fuel economy which is approx 1-2 mpg better.

I cleaned out my intake manifold aswell which was a god awful job, extremely messy and still not perfectly clean after using a whole can of oven cleaner, various other cleaning products and boiling water etc soak with soda crystals overnight and then jet washing it out with a pressure washer. probably a complete waste of time also but I thought that I may aswell finish a job ive started

Should of cleaned the inlet when I changed the egr and intercooler pipes just didn't think it got that bad never mind ill do it soon!!!
