EGR Bypass or just use bolt?

Seeking a bit of advice, is there any real advantage to spending £50 on a decent EGR bypass kit for my TD4 or just take the vacuum pipe off and block it with a small bolt? (And I presume fit short length of blocked pipe to vacuum inlet on EGR to keep crud out.)

I appreciate there will be less air-resistence in the bypass, but it's hardly an F1 car.......

I recently had my EGR off and cleaned it, didn't notice any gasket fixing it to the manifold though???

IMO just get the proper kit.

its not just about the vacume pipe - there will still be exhaust crap flowing through the system and still the original valve blocking most of the air flow.

:)

How do the exhaust gasses get into the EGR if the vacuum pipe is disconnected and the spring holds the valve closed?

Agree on valve blocking pipe, but as I said it's not a F1 car......

Yes the gasket is a ring which fits into a groove, often the existing one is fine (I bought one just in case but didn't need to use it).

You say that it's not an F1 car then why bother at all trying to mod the engine ? If doing it for gaining power than you got to do it properly to gain the best out of the car

I had my ERG valve off a couple of weeks ago for a look. Was amazed at the amount of gunk and carbon soot stuck over everything. Not having time to do a complete strip of the inlet manifold etc or a bypass kit to hand I just gave everything as best a clean out as possible, with rags soaked in carb cleaner for the inlet manifold and turbo hoses, and an old paintbrush with lots of carb cleaner for the valve. The inlet bit from the exhaust feed was closed and sealing fine. Back on it went with the vac hose blocked with a bit of metal rod.
MPG improved from 30 to 35 over my test route, 180 miles to Hull and back + 1 weeks commute of 120 miles, well pleased!
Will sort it properly when I have time!

ok guys, get the hint - I will get a EGR bypass kit.

Which one though, lots listed on e-bay and quite a few coming up in a google search from UK Land Rover parts suppliers......

I fitted the Allisport one to my wife's TD4 and it is excellent, it is about the most expensive available but I like their stuff (I have other parts on my 90) and I like the fact it is alloy like the valve it is replacing.

The improvement at low revs is very distinct, whereas before you had to rev the car to make it pull away cleanly now it will pull from very low revs. In places where before you would have had to drop down to 1st or (occasionally) 2nd gear you can smoothly take them in 3rd and the car will pull cleanly. It makes the engine much more flexible and a pleasure to drive. It is also returning a consistant 38-39MPG whereas before it was 36-37MPG so there is a slight gain there as well.
My wife was originally thinking about a Synergy but now she does not feel she needs one for the sort of driving she does, the EGR removal has transformed it.
