Merry Christmas and happy new year everyone. Got an EGR blanking kit for my TD5 for Christmas (From the missus can you believe :confused: ) fitted it today, and took it for a drive. What a differance it makes. She bought it from Td5 alive, a bit expensive but highly recomended. engine runs and sounds better than before. I will let you know the fuel consumption differance when I take it for a long run.

great news to hear, my TD5 is booked in for the EGR removal and a Hyclone to be fitted, keep us updated on MPG, main reason why I am doing this, but hearing the performance rating is higher is great news.

only own my land rover a few months, being my 1st I'm not up to date with all the jargon. What is a HYCLONE

its a new gadget a lot of independant dealers are recommending to fit. Have a look at their web site, Hiclone.co.uk. That explains the ins and outs, and savings. Mine being done 2nd Jan. Will post results soon after

Just looked at the website, sounds really good, I would like to hear the results when fitted. Td5 alive's version is total removal of the EGR valve and replace with a straight through alloy pipe which attaches to the inlet manifold where the EGR valve sits, then the turbo intercooler hose sits directly onto alloy pipe (40mm dia approx)
 
There are several freds on hiclones on this site. Most seem to think theyre a waste of time and will only give a negligible improvement. Maybe you'll prove them wrong!

If you want to throw cash away, sent it to HybridGirl.

She'll soon find a use for it.

It will be more use than a restriction in your air intake.

Remember, turbulent fluids (air is a fluid) do NOT flow as efficiently as smoothed fluids.

I am only interested in Hiclone cos its the way i have been pointed, but issues your pointing out are grateful. However, if you go on Hiclone websie u will see a link to Landrover world who have tested, with great results

These ideas have been around since the 1920s!
I had old car magazines from the 1950s that showed the amazing device for instant extra power and economy .... a thing exactly like your Hyclone.

It was snake oil then, and it's snake oil now, in my opinion.

If they had merit, not only would the car manufacturers fit them as standard, they would probably be made mandatory like CATs.

I once asked about Hyclones and this was one of the replies.Hope it helps.

I fitted Hyclones to my RR 200TDi and did some road testing to check if it worked. There was a significant improvement on bottom end (off boost)pulling power but I lost some at the top end where I figure it was actually hindering airflow. 0-70 through the gears was about 1.5 sec slower but it took 10 seconds off 30 to 70 in fifth gear. Other in gears proved a loss at the top end with smaller improvements at the bottom end. Can't say what difference it made to economy as shortly after fitting, my RR spent most of its life off-road.
I installed them as instructed, one before the plenum and (against my better judgement!) one before the turbo (this one makes absolutely no sense to me as the principle is to introduce swirl to the airflow. Like the turbo is not going to completly wipe out the influence of that one!).
The concept has merit for older engines with simple intakes but most modern engines have swirl engineered into the head so its a complete waste of time on anything after a 300tdi (and I'm not even sure about the 300).
My honest opinion is that for £50ish you can measurably improve the bottom end of any older technology engine. Thats either worth it to you or not.
As I said above mine spent the rest of its life off road where bottom end is more important than top so I got a useful improvement and I left mine in and consider it money well spent. I probably should take out the one before the turbo and sell it on to anyone who wants it.

Correct, and the way the inlet ports are arranged do that too.
Some inlet valves used to have extra bits to induce swirl, but all of that is swirl IN the combustion chamber. That helps efficient combustion = power and economy.

BUT, from the air filter all the way to the inlet valves, we want minimum restriction to air flow, so we get the most air into our cylinders as possible. More air is good. Turbos pump extra air in.

Anything that creates a restriction of any kind has to be considered b-a-d.

It is a steel-tipped spigot that assists the process once it gets hot.
It gets VERY hot .... nearly RED HOT, and when the piston hits the point of injection, the fuel is sprayed right onto that spigot .... WOOOMPH!

Faster burn, nicer to drive (more like a petrol engine) power and economy improved.
