hey,

My question of the day is this, ive read a few threads saying you would want to be an idiot to pay for an egr blanking kit when you can just blank it with a piece of tin!? is this safe, or is it in any way more likely to ruin my engine  im going to try it in the next hour anyway so i said id ask firfs:D

thanks

You could blank it with a piece of cardboard but it wont last long. A piece of tin will last a year or two before it burns through. A piece of 2mm mild steel will last longer. 1/2" plate steel will last forever.
Blanking is only half the job though. You really want to remove the EGR valve restriction completely if you want maximum benefits.

ta shifty, i went and did it anyway, was only trying to see if there was going to be much of a difference, and if there was id buy the td5 alive one, but there wasnt a change at all, that said the two bolts connecting the egr pipe to the manifold were well seized so i blanked further down the pipe, (see pic), would that have an effect?

It'll stop the exhaust gasses entering the inlet manifold so yes it will have the same effect.
Pull the intercooler hose off the EGR valve body and have a look at what condition its in. It may be all clogged with soot and ****e in which case it will be restricting your airflow.

don't be a tight ass and do the job right :D , there is no real difference to be noticed just that your engine will last alot longer when its taking in clean air rather than exhaust fumes

Disconnect the the EGR valve wires as well. Just unplug the connector and wrap in some insulating tape. Then the ECU will assume you dont have an EGR fitted and stop trying to operate the valve and adjust fuelling etc. Leave the vacuum hoses alone at this stage.
