egr blanking or not

got a freelander td4 2001 is there any way of testing i.e blocking of a pipe or something to see if i would benefit from fully blanking off the egr. if so which pipe if possible a picture would be great as i am a novice.
at the moment i sometimes get a loss of power when idling it is as if it is missing but the problem is intermittent.When i increase the revs it is great.
 
You can blank off the small pipe that comes off the back of the EGR Valve. People have used discs of tin or two pence peices. Read the sticky thread above.

I suspect though that there isnt a huge improvement just blanking the pipe. By fitting a replacement EGR valve that is in effect, just a tube, or just removing the innards of a stock EGR valve then the increased airflow improves the vehicle.
 
you can check for a small improvement by preventing the valve from actuating. Simply remove the small bore cotton braided pipe onto the front of the valve and block the end of it with something like a 1" No. 8 wood screw. If there is a small improvement, then the valve is probably acting up. But the most benefit is achieved by fitting a egr bypass, which are available on ebay for about £40. Not only does this blank off the egr port, but it also removes the obstruction that the internals of the valve cause to airflow.

The improvement couldn't be described as earth shatteringly different, but the should be a discernable improvement across the rev range with an increase in low end driveability.

If your 8 year old egr valve is any thing like mine was then remove it and clean out the gunge to start with , as mine was 50% blocked up with the black tar stuff

did it make a noticeable difference as i am getting an ticking over problem. all ok when the engine is above 1000 revs

Low down power was better , Might be worth doing and you can check the turbo pipes are ok while the plastic top is off .
I also changed the crankcase filter unit as this was gunged up aswell !
